Chapter 13 - The Name Under Black Ink

Evelyn returned to Ashbourne with Lily that evening.

Federal investigators still occupied part of the west wing, but the private security guards were gone. Vanessa’s clothing had been removed from the principal bedroom. Grant’s office was sealed.

The house felt larger without them.

Lily stood in the foyer and stared at the place where the velvet cushion had been.

Evelyn knelt beside her.

“You will never kneel there again.”

“Is Vanessa coming back?”

“No.”

“Is Daddy?”

“Not for a long time.”

Lily looked down.

“Is he bad?”

Evelyn chose her words carefully.

“Your father made choices that hurt people. He will have to answer for them.”

“Does he still love me?”

Evelyn’s heart tightened.

“I believe he does. But loving someone does not make every choice safe or kind.”

Lily considered this.

Then she reached for Evelyn’s hand.

“Can I have my old room back?”

“Yes.”

“And the yellow stars on the ceiling?”

“We will paint them together.”

That night, Lily fell asleep in Evelyn’s bed with one hand holding the sleeve of her mother’s shirt.

Evelyn remained beside her until the child’s breathing became deep and even.

A satisfying legal victory had restored the house.

It had not restored Lily’s trust.

That would take time, consistency and promises that Evelyn never broke again.

At midnight, Owen called.

The court had released a partially redacted copy of the beneficiary filing.

The name remained covered under a protective order.

However, the identity evidence included fingerprints, DNA records and testimony from Simon Vale.

“Simon is alive?” Evelyn asked.

“He entered federal protection sixteen years ago.”

“Why?”

“He claimed Charles tried to have him killed.”

Evelyn looked toward the dark windows.

“Do you believe him?”

“I no longer know which version of Charles to believe.”

Owen sent the filing.

Most pages were covered in black rectangles.

One paragraph remained visible.

The claimant asserts that Helena Vale Hartwell did not die in the vehicle fire recorded on May 14. The claimant further asserts that Helena lived under federal protection until her actual death twelve years later.

Evelyn calculated the date.

Her mother had been alive until Evelyn was twenty.

All those birthdays.

All those school ceremonies.

The day Evelyn graduated from the military academy.

The day she married Grant.

Helena had been alive for all of them.

The filing continued.

Helena’s firstborn daughter received a new identity due to credible threats involving Hartwell Meridian’s original guidance technology. Charles Hartwell maintained secret financial support while publicly denying her existence.

The claimant requested immediate recognition as Aurelia Vale and restoration of twelve percent ownership.

The signature line had been redacted.

Evelyn enlarged the document.

Beneath the black ink, the bottom curve of one handwritten letter remained visible.

It could have been an A.

It could also have been an E.

Reed called a few minutes later.

“The DNA evidence is genuine.”

“So Aurelia is alive.”

“The sample belongs to a daughter of Helena Hartwell.”

“That does not prove the claimant is Aurelia.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at the warning from her father’s will.

Do not trust the woman wearing Helena’s ring.

“Could the sample be mine?”

Reed was silent for a beat too long.

“What did you find?”

“Someone accessed a stored sample from your medical file three weeks ago.”

“Grant?”

“No. The access came from a Hartwell Foundation clinic.”

Vanessa had directed the foundation.

Evelyn called her under the terms of Vanessa’s cooperation agreement.

Vanessa answered from federal protection.

“Did you give my DNA to Grant?”

“No.”

“Someone accessed my medical file through the foundation.”

Vanessa hesitated.

“The Founder requested it.”

“You met her?”

“Once.”

“Did you see her face?”

“Yes.”

“You said Grant called her Evelyn.”

“He did.”

“Why?”

“Because she told him that you were not Evelyn Hartwell.”

Evelyn gripped the phone.

Vanessa continued.

“She claimed Charles switched the identities of his daughters after Helena disappeared.”

“That makes no sense.”

“She said Aurelia was given your name, and you were given hers.”

“Which one did she claim to be?”

“I do not know.”

“You saw her face.”

“Yes.”

“Was she my sister?”

Vanessa’s breathing changed.

“She looked exactly like you.”

The call ended.

At the same moment, the mansion’s front gate opened.

A federal vehicle approached through the darkness.

Agent Reed stepped out carrying a sealed gray folder.

Evelyn looked toward the staircase.

Lily was still asleep upstairs.

Then the security screen showed another vehicle following Reed through the gate.

Grant sat in the back seat between two federal officers.
