Chapter 13 - The Phone Call)

The first message went to Sterling Meridian’s board.

The second went to every lending institution connected to the family trusts.

The third froze all discretionary transfers involving Vanessa Sterling and Julian Cross pending fraud review.

The fourth activated a property security provision removing Julian’s access to the Southampton estate.

The fifth triggered a board resolution suspending Charles Brenner.

The sixth went directly to federal investigators.

One command.

Proceed.

The wedding music stopped.

Julian’s phone vibrated.

Vanessa’s followed.

Then again.

And again.

Vanessa looked down.

Her face turned pale.

“What the hell did you do?”

Julian lunged.

Richard blocked him.

Evelyn dropped the Southampton deed at Julian’s feet.

“Pick it up, asshole. Read the owner’s name.”

He looked down.

The deed had never transferred.

Every document he had planned around was useless.

His eyes lifted.

For the first time, Evelyn saw fear.

Sirens sounded beyond the beach entrance.

Guests screamed and turned.

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“Mom?”

Evelyn lifted the investigation folder.

“Oh, and Julian?”

He stared.

“Should I tell my daughter your real fucking name?”

Everything stopped.

Vanessa turned slowly.

“What?”

Evelyn opened the folder.

“Marcus Vale.”

Julian’s face changed.

Vanessa stepped away from him.

“Who is Marcus?”

Evelyn removed the photograph.

Claire’s former fiancé.

The police station.

Thirteen years earlier.

Vanessa took it.

Her hands shook.

“That’s you.”

Julian said nothing.

“Julian?”

He backed away.

“Vanessa, this is fabricated.”

She looked at the photograph.

Then him.

“You said she’d do this.”

“She did.”

Another photograph.

Daniel Mercer.

Wedding license with Sarah Ellison.

Vanessa stared.

“You were married before?”

“No.”

Evelyn said, “He was.”

“Shut up!”

Julian shouted so violently several guests stepped back.

Vanessa flinched.

He saw it.

He reached for her.

She retreated.

“Don’t touch me.”

“Vanessa.”

“Don’t.”

Police officers entered the pavilion.

Agent Warren stood.

“Marcus Vale!”

Julian looked toward the beach.

Evelyn understood before anyone else.

He was going to run.

“Julian,” she said.

He looked at her.

“Lake Winter.”

His face drained.

That confirmed Sarah’s message.

Then Marcus ran.

He bolted from the altar.

Guests scattered.

Police followed.

Marcus sprinted across the lawn toward the beach path instead of the driveway.

The marina.

Sarah had warned them.

Agent Warren shouted into her radio.

“South perimeter!”

Vanessa remained frozen.

Evelyn grabbed her.

“Stay with Richard.”

“Mom…”

“Stay here.”

Evelyn moved after the agents.

Richard caught her arm.

“You are sixty-three years old wearing designer heels.”

“That is not a legal restriction.”

“You are not chasing a fugitive.”

Evelyn stopped.

He was right.

She hated it.

They watched agents disappear beyond the dunes.

Vanessa began crying behind them.

Evelyn turned.

Her daughter looked smaller than she had in years.

“He’s not Julian?”

Evelyn walked back slowly.

“No.”

“You knew?”

“For less than three weeks.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I tried.”

“You didn’t tell me this.”

“You wouldn’t have believed me.”

Vanessa stared at her.

That truth hurt.

Then Vanessa looked toward the guests.

Phones were everywhere.

Whispers.

Shock.

Her wedding destroyed.

Her marriage exposed as a fraud.

Her mother publicly insulted.

“I said horrible things to you.”

Evelyn did not answer.

“Mom.”

“This is not the moment.”

“When is the moment?”

“When you understand what happened to you.”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“What happened to me?”

“You were targeted.”

“Because of you.”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised her.

Evelyn continued.

“And because of choices I made when you were younger. Because I gave other people too much room to explain me to you.”

Vanessa stared.

“But what you said today was still your choice.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.”

A gunshot sounded beyond the dunes.

Everyone screamed.

Evelyn turned.

Another shot.

Then silence.

Agent Warren’s voice came through Richard’s earpiece.

“Suspect vehicle located. No suspect.”

“What vehicle?” Evelyn asked.

Richard listened.

“A boat.”

Evelyn’s heart sank.

“He reached the marina?”

“Maybe.”

Police boats began moving offshore.

Five minutes passed.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Then Agent Warren returned alone.

“Where is he?” Evelyn asked.

Warren’s jaw was tight.

“He had a boat staged behind the neighboring property.”

“So he escaped.”

“We have Coast Guard units moving.”

Evelyn looked toward the ocean.

A helicopter appeared in the distance.

Vanessa whispered, “He left me.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Vanessa stared at the water.

“He didn’t even look back.”

Evelyn took her daughter’s hand.

Vanessa did not pull away.

For the first time in months, they stood together.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

He listened.

“Where?”

Another pause.

“Send it.”

He ended the call.

Evelyn knew.

“What now?”

“The police found Charles Brenner.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Richard looked toward the ocean.

“In Marcus’s abandoned boat.”

Vanessa stared.

“Why?”

May you like

Richard’s expression darkened.

“He was tied up.”
