Chapter 11 - The Woman Who Should Have Been Dead)

At four twelve the morning of the wedding, Evelyn’s phone rang.
She was awake.
She had not slept.
The number was unknown.
“Hello?”
A woman whispered.
“Don’t hang up.”
Evelyn sat upright.
“Who is this?”
“You’re Evelyn Sterling.”
“Yes.”
“You’re looking for Sarah Ellison.”
Evelyn stopped breathing.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“I am Sarah Ellison.”
Evelyn stood.
The room seemed to tilt.
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Sarah Mercer?”
“I haven’t used Mercer in nine years.”
“Are you safe?”
“No.”
“Where are you?”
“I said I can’t tell you.”
Evelyn switched on a lamp.
“How did you get my number?”
“Claire.”
“Claire Donnelly?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Claire had known.
“Why does everyone think you disappeared?”
“Because I did.”
“Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“Did he hurt you?”
Sarah did not answer.
“Did he try?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s grip tightened.
“What happened?”
“I found the network.”
“Harrow Bay?”
Silence.
“Sarah?”
“That name is only part of it.”
“What does that mean?”
“Harrow Bay launders money and creates acquisition structures. It isn’t the top.”
“Who is?”
“I don’t know.”
“Graham Voss?”
“He recruits. protects. cleans.”
“Marcus?”
“A specialist.”
“In what?”
“Families.”
The word chilled Evelyn.
Sarah continued.
“He finds the person closest to the asset. The lonely daughter. The neglected son. The widow. The second wife. Whoever wants something badly enough to ignore warning signs.”
Evelyn thought of Vanessa.
“Why contact me now?”
“Because he’s going to finish today.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Sarah’s voice sharpened.
“You know about the shares.”
“Yes.”
“The incapacity plan?”
“Yes.”
“The medication?”
“Yes.”
Sarah went silent.
“You know more than I expected.”
“Then tell me what I don’t.”
“The wedding is not only about your company.”
“What else?”
“I don’t know.”
“You just said…”
“I found a code in Marcus’s old files. He used it when an operation had more than one objective.”
“What code?”
“Double inheritance.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“I never learned.”
“Could it mean Vanessa?”
“Maybe.”
“What about her?”
“I don’t know.”
Evelyn walked toward the window.
The ocean was still black beyond the property.
“Sarah, come to the police.”
“No.”
“Federal agents can protect you.”
“They tried before.”
“What happened?”
“I was located within seventy-two hours.”
“By Marcus?”
“By someone.”
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Did you send Vanessa your photograph last night?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She needed doubt.”
“You nearly destroyed the operation.”
“She needed doubt more.”
“Why?”
“Because if everything fails today, she needs to hesitate before she follows him.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Sarah was right.
“Do you have evidence?”
“Yes.”
“Enough to convict him?”
“Maybe.”
“Where?”
Another pause.
“Ask Marcus about Lake Winter.”
“What is that?”
“He’ll know.”
“Sarah…”
“If he runs, don’t let him reach the marina.”
“Why?”
“He keeps exit plans near water.”
The line disconnected.
Evelyn immediately called Agent Warren.
Within thirty minutes, federal agents were tracing the call.
It had bounced through multiple relays.
No location.
No confirmation Sarah was truly alive.
But Claire answered one question.
Yes.
Sarah had contacted her three months earlier.
Why had Claire hidden it?
Because Sarah begged her.
At six thirty, Richard arrived.
Evelyn was already dressed in a pale morning robe while her hair stylist waited nervously in the next room.
“Double inheritance,” Richard said. “I searched everything.”
“And?”
“Nothing.”
“Lake Winter?”
“Several places with that name.”
“Marcus knows which one.”
Richard looked at her.
“You’re still going through with this.”
“Yes.”
“At this point, I’ve stopped trying to stop you.”
“Growth.”
“I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Some mornings.”
Evelyn almost smiled.
Then Richard handed her another paper.
“What is this?”
“Charles disappeared.”
“When?”
“Sometime after midnight.”
Evelyn looked up.
“Ran?”
“His car is gone. Phone left at his apartment.”
“Federal surveillance?”
“He was low priority overnight.”
“That was a mistake.”
“Yes.”
“Where would he go?”
Richard shook his head.
Evelyn’s stylist called gently from the other room.
“Mrs. Sterling?”
“One minute.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“If Charles warned Marcus…”
“He didn’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Marcus is still here.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
“It means he thinks today still benefits him.”
Richard studied her.
“You understand there are simpler ways to spend a Saturday.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“Vanessa always wanted a memorable wedding.”
At ten fifteen, Evelyn stepped outside.
The estate had transformed overnight.
White silk.
Roses.
Champagne.
Security disguised as catering staff.
Agents disguised as guests.
Two hundred real guests who had no idea they were walking into the center of a federal operation.
Vanessa stood on the balcony above.
For a moment, mother and daughter saw each other.
Vanessa looked away first.
Evelyn felt the pain.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from Agent Warren.
Marcus contacted unknown number. Seven-second call.
Another message came.
Only words captured: “If she refuses, proceed with alternative.”
Evelyn stared at the screen.
May you like
Alternative.
For the first time all morning, she felt afraid.
