CHAPTER 3: The Wedding That Became a Trial

The wedding hall inside the Whitmore mansion looked like a dream.

White flowers covered both sides of the aisle. Crystal chandeliers hung high from the ceiling, reflecting candlelight into thousands of glittering sparks. The orchestra played a soft love song. More than three hundred guests stood as the doors at the end of the hall opened.

Vivian appeared.

She was so beautiful that the entire room seemed to hold its breath.

Her wedding dress hugged her slender figure, its long train dragging across the shining marble floor. In her hands was a bouquet of white roses. A thin veil covered her face, and her eyes shimmered as if she were about to cry from happiness.

Helena sat in the front row, her hands clenched tightly together.

She wanted to stand up.

She wanted to scream.

She wanted to stop everything.

But Gabriel turned his head and looked at her.

Just one look.

Calm.

Certain.

As if he were saying:

“Trust me.”

Helena bit her lip and forced herself to stay seated.

Vivian stopped in front of Gabriel.

She looked up at him, her voice trembling.

“I have waited for this moment for so long.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“So have I.”

No one heard the coldness hidden inside that sentence.

The officiant began the opening speech. He spoke of love, trust, and lifelong promises. The guests smiled. A few people even wiped away tears.

Then the officiant turned to Gabriel.

“Gabriel Whitmore, do you take Vivian Reed to be your wife, and promise to love, protect, and trust her for the rest of your life?”

The entire hall became silent.

Vivian looked at Gabriel, her eyes shining.

Gabriel said nothing.

One second.

Two seconds.

Vivian’s smile stiffened.

The officiant gently reminded him:

“Gabriel?”

Gabriel slowly turned and looked at all the guests.

Then he said:

“Before I answer, I have a gift for the bride.”

Whispers spread through the hall.

Vivian blinked.

“A gift?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Yes. A surprise.”

He raised his hand.

Immediately, the large screen behind the altar lit up.

At first, the guests thought it was a romantic video of the bride and groom.

But then the image appeared.

It was the hallway outside the bride’s room.

Vivian, in her wedding dress, was standing beside Damien Cole.

The sound echoed clearly through the hall.

“As long as he drinks that glass of wine after the ceremony, everything will go exactly as planned.”

The entire room went dead silent.

Vivian turned pale.

Damien tried to leave, but two security guards were already blocking the door.

On the screen, Vivian picked up the stack of papers.

“The transfer documents are ready. When Gabriel wakes up, he will have nothing left.”

A sharp gasp came from among the guests.

Helena closed her eyes as tears fell.

Not because she was afraid anymore.

But because the truth had finally been brought into the light.

Vivian stepped back.

“Gabriel… this isn’t what you think.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“Then what do you want me to think?”

She shook her head in panic.

“I was forced. I had no choice.”

Damien shouted from the back of the room:

“Shut up, Vivian!”

Gabriel turned toward him.

“You should be the one staying silent, Mr. Cole.”

He snapped his fingers.

A middle-aged man in a gray suit stepped out from the row of seats. He held a leather briefcase.

Gabriel said loudly:

“This is Mr. Nathan Lowell, the legal representative of Whitmore Corporation. Over the past three months, we have collected evidence of forged documents, contract manipulation, and conspiracy to seize assets.”

Damien gave a harsh laugh.

“You think a few video clips are enough?”

Nathan Lowell opened his briefcase.

“Not just video clips. We have call recordings, money transfer records, drafts of forged contracts, and testimony from the person you hired to switch the documents.”

Damien’s expression changed.

Vivian turned sharply toward him.

“You said no one knew!”

That sentence was enough.

The entire hall erupted in shock.

Gabriel looked at Vivian. There was no anger left in his eyes. Only disappointment.

“I gave you many chances.”

Vivian began to cry.

“No. You don’t understand. My father lost everything because of your family. My mother broke down because of it too. I grew up hearing that the Whitmores destroyed my family. I only wanted to take back what belonged to me.”

Helena stood up.

She walked forward step by step, her voice trembling but clear.

“Vivian, if you had come here to ask for the truth, we could have looked into the old records together. But you chose to deceive my son. You chose to turn a wedding into a trap.”

Vivian looked at her, eyes red.

“You don’t know what it feels like to lose a father.”

Helena was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“I do.”

The room fell quiet.

“My husband died when Gabriel was very young. I once wanted to blame someone too. I once wanted to believe that if there was a villain to hate, the pain would become easier to bear. But hatred does not bring the dead back, Vivian. It only turns the living into the very thing they once hated.”

Vivian trembled.

Damien shouted:

“Don’t listen to her! Your father died because of Whitmore! Have you forgotten?”

Gabriel turned to the screen.

Another document appeared.

It was an old investigation file.

Nathan Lowell said:

“Malcolm Blake did not go bankrupt because of Whitmore. He was betrayed by his own close associate, who secretly drained money from the investment fund and then blamed a business rival. That associate later changed his name, left the financial market, and lived under a new identity.”

Gabriel looked at Damien.

“That new name was Damien Cole.”

Vivian froze.

She turned to Damien, her face white.

“No…”

Damien stepped back.

“Lies.”

Nathan continued:

“We have copies of foreign account transactions, signature comparisons, and a handwritten letter from Malcolm Blake before his death. In the letter, he wrote that the person who betrayed him was not Whitmore.”

The bouquet slipped from Vivian’s hands and fell to the floor.

White petals scattered around her feet.

“You told me my father was destroyed by Whitmore,” she whispered. “You told me I had to take revenge.”

Damien could no longer remain calm.

“Because you needed a purpose to live! Without me, you were nothing but an abandoned child!”

Those words struck Vivian like a slap.

Security restrained Damien as he tried to escape.

There was no long chaos.

Only the humiliating collapse of a man who had used another person’s hatred to hide his own crime.

Vivian stood in the middle of the hall, her wedding dress still pure white, but all light had disappeared from her face.

She looked at Gabriel.

“You knew everything… so why did you still let me walk in here?”

Gabriel was silent for a long time.

“Because I wanted to give you a chance to stop.”

Vivian cried without making a sound.

“Did you ever love me?”

Gabriel looked at her, and for a moment, something cracked in his eyes.

“Yes.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

“And now?”

Gabriel answered softly:

“Now I only feel sorry for the girl you could have become.”

Vivian lowered her head.

The police arrived not long after.

Vivian did not resist.

Before leaving, she turned back and looked at Helena.

“I’m sorry.”

Helena did not say, “I forgive you.”

Because forgiveness could not come that easily.

She only replied:

“Tell the truth to the law. That is the first right thing you can do.”

Vivian nodded and walked away.

The wedding hall was still full of flowers, candles, and guests.

But the wedding had ended before the vows were ever spoken.

Gabriel stood silently at the altar.

Helena walked to his side and placed her hand against his cheek.

“How long have you carried this alone?”

Gabriel looked at his mother.

The cold mask on his face finally cracked.

“I’m sorry I scared you.”

Helena hugged him.

“You foolish boy,” she said through tears. “I am not afraid of the truth. I am only afraid of losing you.”

Gabriel closed his eyes and held his mother tightly.

May you like

In the wedding hall prepared for a false marriage, mother and son stood together, needing no vows, no applause.

Only the truth.
