Chapter 9 - The Truth in the Envelope

Anthony rose unsteadily, still holding the documents.
“This is revenge.”
“No,” Marissa replied. “Revenge would have been exposing you before the settlement. This is accountability.”
He looked toward the guests.
“My company was successful before her.”
Rachel opened a second folder.
“Your company received eighty-four percent of its operating funds from Marissa’s investment entity. It also received contracts from Bennett Urban Holdings based on reports you personally certified.”
Anthony said nothing.
Rachel continued.
“Several reports contained work that was never performed. Some invoices were used to cover your mother’s personal expenses. The settlement protects your parenting rights, but it does not protect you from commercial fraud or contractual default.”
Eleanor turned on her son.
“You said everything was secure.”
“It was supposed to be.”
“You said the company belonged to you.”
“It did.”
Marissa shook her head.
“It belonged to the person who built it honestly. You treated borrowed opportunity like inherited power.”
Anthony’s humiliation transformed into desperation.
He moved closer to Marissa, though he kept a safe distance from Noah.
“What do you want?”
“For you to honor the divorce agreement, repay what you owe and stop using our son in your public performance.”
“I never used Noah.”
Marissa nodded toward the guests’ phones.
“Then ask everyone here to stop recording him.”
Anthony looked around.
Several relatives immediately lowered their devices.
For once, he appeared ashamed.
Marissa handed Noah to his nanny, who carried him safely into the playroom.
Then she spoke quietly enough that the room had to become completely still.
“You cheated on me. You signed my name. You tried to move my property into an entity you controlled. You helped your mother spend money she knew was not hers. Through all of it, you called me cruel whenever I asked for a boundary.”
Anthony’s eyes filled with tears.
“I made mistakes.”
“A mistake happens once. A plan has drafts, signatures and legal advice.”
Eleanor sank onto the sofa.
Her anger had disappeared. Without Marissa’s money, she could no longer pretend superiority.
Anthony looked down at the papers.
“What happens now?”
“You build a life you can actually afford.”
“And if I cannot repay everything?”
“Then my company will recover what the contract allows. Nothing more.”
Marissa walked toward the penthouse doors.

“This celebration is over.”
One by one, the guests followed her instruction.
