Chapter 5 - The Woman at the Hotel

The final betrayal did not arrive through an investigator.

It arrived through a hotel invoice.

Anthony’s assistant accidentally forwarded it to the household office. The bill included a luxury suite, room service for two and a jewelry purchase charged through the hotel concierge.

The dates matched a weekend when Anthony claimed he was attending a conference in Boston.

Marissa could have ignored it until her legal preparations were complete.

Instead, she went to the hotel.

She did not storm upstairs. She waited in the lobby, seated beneath a gold chandelier with her hands folded calmly in her lap.

Forty minutes later, Anthony emerged from the elevator beside a blonde woman Marissa recognized as a consultant from his company.

He saw Marissa immediately.

The color left his face.

The woman whispered something and walked away.

Anthony approached with the expression of a man already searching for a useful lie.

“It isn’t what you think.”

Marissa stood.

“I think you used my household account to pay for a hotel room while telling me you were in Boston.”

“We were working.”

“Then send the invoice to your company.”

His eyes hardened.

“You followed me?”

“Your assistant sent the bill to my office.”

Anthony glanced around the lobby.

“Do not make a scene.”

Marissa almost smiled at the hypocrisy.

“I’m not making one.”

That frightened him more than shouting would have.

She removed her wedding ring and placed it in his hand.

“Come home tonight and pack a bag. The divorce papers will arrive tomorrow.”

His fingers closed around the ring.

“You’ll regret humiliating me.”

“No, Anthony. I regret trusting you.”

He leaned closer.

“My mother was right about you. You think money makes you untouchable.”

Marissa met his gaze.

May you like

“No. Evidence does.”

For the first time, Anthony looked uncertain.
