Chapter 4 - Someone Used Richard's Name)

Richard took the phone.

He read the subject line twice.

"I never filed anything."

Malcolm opened his briefcase.

"That request reached our office fourteen days ago."

"And you didn't tell me?"

"It carried your digital credentials and came through the estate portal."

Richard's voice lowered.

"What exactly did it ask?"

"To replace Evelyn as independent trustee with Mercer Private Management."

Richard stared at him.

"That's one of our internal subsidiaries."

"Yes."

Richard looked toward Derek.

Derek raised both hands.

"I don't even have access to that system."

Richard laughed without humor.

"You had access until I fired you."

"Not at that level."

"You worked in operations."

"Vendor operations. Not estate management."

Malcolm turned toward Caroline.

"May I see the phone?"

She handed it over.

He began scrolling.

Derek watched.

Too carefully.

Evelyn saw it.

"Caroline," she said quietly, "when did you last personally access that email account?"

"January. Maybe early February."

"Who knew the password?"

"Derek."

He interrupted.

"Because she gave it to me."

Caroline looked at him.

"I gave it to you to download tax forms."

"Exactly."

"Not to take over my account."

"I didn't."

Malcolm looked up.

"Someone changed the recovery number on February twelfth."

Caroline's face tightened.

"To what?"

He turned the screen toward her.

The number ended in 4471.

Caroline knew it immediately.

"Derek."

He shook his head.

"It's an old number."

"It's your work number."

"Was."

Richard took out his own phone.

"Malcolm, contact security at Mercer."

Derek stepped forward.

"For what?"

"To preserve every access log tied to your employee credentials."

"You can't accuse me based on a phone number."

"I'm not accusing you."

Richard dialed.

"I'm documenting you."

Derek grabbed his suitcase handle.

"I'm leaving."

Caroline did not move.

He looked at her.

"Come on."

"No."

The word surprised even her.

Derek stared.

"We're not staying here for some interrogation."

"I'm staying."

"Caroline."

She looked at the cracked phone in Malcolm's hands.

"Did you take my money?"

"No."

"Did you sign the loan request?"

"I told you, I was trying to solve the cash problem."

"Did you change my email recovery number?"

"No."

"Did you submit a request to remove Evelyn from Mom's trust?"

"No."

Caroline's voice broke.

"Then why does every road lead to you?"

Derek's jaw clenched.

"Because your family has decided it should."

He pointed toward Evelyn.

"Especially her."

Evelyn did not respond.

Derek stepped closer to Caroline.

"Think about this. Until this morning you thought she was living off your father. Now suddenly she owns the house, your apartment, controls your inheritance, and somehow every financial problem is my fault."

Richard moved forward.

"Get away from her."

Derek ignored him.

"Doesn't that feel convenient?"

For a moment, Caroline's eyes shifted toward Evelyn.

The old instinct returned.

Suspicion was easier than shame.

Evelyn knew it.

She also knew arguing would make it worse.

So she simply said, "You don't have to trust me."

Derek smiled.

"See?"

Evelyn continued.

"You only have to verify the records."

His smile disappeared.

Malcolm nodded.

"That's exactly what we're going to do."

Caroline looked toward the phone.

"Can we see where the trustee removal request came from?"

"Possibly."

"How long?"

"If the system logs are intact, today."

Derek picked up his suitcase.

"I'm getting a hotel."

Caroline looked at him.

"With what money?"

The question struck harder than a shout.

Derek froze.

For years Caroline had assumed sarcasm was power.

Now she heard what genuine power sounded like.

It sounded like a question someone else could not answer.

Derek released the suitcase.

Richard pointed toward the front door.

"You have ten minutes to take your personal belongings."

Derek stared at Caroline.

"You're choosing them?"

"No."

Her eyes filled.

"I'm choosing to understand what happened."

"You'll regret this."

"Maybe."

He waited.

She did not move.

Derek went upstairs.

The moment he disappeared, Caroline collapsed into the chair.

She pressed both hands against her face.

Richard reached toward her.

She flinched.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"Caroline."

"How did I not know he lost his job?"

No one answered.

"Eleven weeks."

She looked at Richard.

"You knew for eleven weeks."

"I thought he told you."

"You fired my husband and never called me?"

"He asked me to let him tell you."

"And you believed him?"

Richard's expression shifted.

That question had no good answer.

Caroline laughed bitterly.

"You always talk about responsibility until responsibility requires an uncomfortable phone call."

Richard sat down.

She turned toward Evelyn.

"And you."

Evelyn waited.

"You knew we weren't paying rent."

"Yes."

"You didn't call me directly."

"I did."

"Before Derek took over my email."

"Twice."

Caroline tried to remember.

She vaguely remembered rejecting calls from an unknown corporate number.

She had told Derek to deal with it.

Her anger lost some momentum.

"I ignored them."

"Yes."

The simplicity hurt.

No excuses.

No rescue.

Just fact.

Caroline stared at the chore list.

She reached for it.

Read the line at the bottom.

Since you live off Dad, earn your keep.

Her cheeks burned.

She folded the page once.

Then again.

"I'm not apologizing yet."

Evelyn almost smiled.

"I didn't ask you to."

"I still don't understand you."

"That's fair."

"I still think you kept things from me."

"I did."

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

"And from me."

Evelyn met his gaze.

"Yes."

Their unfinished conversation hung between them.

Then Derek returned.

He had changed clothes.

A navy jacket covered his green cardigan.

He carried a duffel bag but not the suitcases.

"Those are Caroline's," he said.

He walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned.

"Ask Evelyn one thing."

No one spoke.

Derek looked directly at Caroline.

"Ask her why your mother chose a woman she'd met four times instead of your father."

Caroline stiffened.

Derek opened the door.

Then added, "And ask what Anne gave her in return."

He left.

The door closed.

Richard slowly turned toward Evelyn.

"What did Anne give you?"

Evelyn looked at Malcolm.

His face told her the past had finally arrived.

"A key," she said.

Caroline frowned.

"To what?"

May you like

Evelyn looked toward the locked office upstairs.

"The room you tried to take last night."
