Chapter 5 - the question that changed everything

There are moments when betrayal becomes so large that your mind cannot hold all of it at once.
You begin with one question.
Did he know?
I sat at my kitchen island staring at Jonathan's email until the words stopped feeling like English.
The Vanguard president has a personal reason to want this deal completed.
We can use that.
Miriam arrived twenty minutes later.
Elena joined by secure video.
I had changed from pajamas into work clothes without remembering doing it.
"Tell me everything," I said.
Elena shared the timeline.
Two months earlier, NexoCloud had been informed that an unnamed private investment fund was considering leading its financing round.
Only a small group knew the fund was Vanguard.
Three weeks later, Jonathan wrote the email to Gerald.
"How could he know about me?" I asked.
"We are investigating," Elena said.
Miriam leaned forward.
"Could you have said anything?"
"No."
"Did he ever see your work laptop?"
"Never unlocked."
"Mail?"
"No."
"Visitors?"
"No."
Then I remembered something.
Six months earlier, Jonathan had surprised me at the apartment.
I had been on a call with Miriam.
He arrived while I was finishing.
I told him it was a friend from work.
Had I said her full name?
Maybe.
Miriam Cole was publicly identified as Vanguard's chief operating officer.
But that still would not explain Jonathan knowing I was president.
"What personal reason could he mean besides me?"
Elena shook her head.
"We don't know."
"Could there be another connection?"
"Possible."
I hated uncertainty.
As an investor, uncertainty was manageable.
As a wife, it was poison.
Miriam asked, "Do you want us to investigate whether Jonathan accessed your personal information?"
"Yes."
Elena nodded.
"We already have forensic specialists available."
"Do it."
At eight the next morning, Vanguard's independent committee met without me.
I went to the office anyway.
Not the public office where junior staff and visitors worked.
The executive floor.
The floor Jonathan had never seen.
My name was etched discreetly beside the main conference room.
Charlotte Davis
President
I stood in front of it for a long time.
For years, keeping my personal life separate from wealth had felt like freedom.
Now I wondered whether secrecy had created its own kind of blindness.
I had tested Jonathan without realizing he might have been testing me too.
At 8:47, Simone texted.
Divorce filed.
At 8:51, Jonathan called.
At 8:52, he called again.
At 8:55, Gerald called.
At 8:56, Florence called.
At 9:03, Jonathan sent a message.
What did you do?
He could only mean the divorce.
I did not answer.
At 9:14, another message arrived.
My company's investor meeting was suddenly moved up. Is this you?
I stared at it.
He suspected a connection.
Maybe because of timing.
Maybe because he knew more.
At 9:30, Miriam entered my office.
"The committee voted."
I stood.
"And?"
"They suspended the investment."
I closed my eyes.
Not from satisfaction.
From grief.
NexoCloud employed more than seven hundred people.
Many had families.
Mortgages.
Medical bills.
Plans.
"Unanimous?"
"Yes."
"Reason?"
"Material diligence concerns."
"Any path forward?"
"Potentially."
"What conditions?"
"Leadership change, forensic audit, corrected financials, lender cooperation."
I nodded slowly.
"That's fair."
"Charlotte."
"What?"
"You don't need to pretend this doesn't hurt."
"I'm not pretending."
"You married him two days ago."
"I know."
She crossed the office.
"You can be furious and still behave professionally."
"I'm terrified that if I show anger, everyone will think this is revenge."
Miriam shook her head.
"The evidence exists whether you're angry or not."
Before I could respond, Elena called.
"We found the source of Jonathan's information."
My heart stopped.
"Who?"
"A junior analyst at a bank involved in the financing leaked Vanguard's identity to Lucas Miller."
"Lucas."
"Yes."
"Did Lucas know I was president?"
"Not from the leak."
"Then how did Jonathan know the president had a personal reason?"
Elena paused.
"We found another message."
She sent it.
It was between Lucas and Jonathan.
Lucas wrote, Vanguard is run by a woman named Charlotte Davis. Isn't that your Charlotte's name?
Jonathan replied three minutes later.
Same name. Different person. Mine works admin and drives a Honda.
Lucas answered.
You sure?
Jonathan wrote.
Very.
Then, seventeen minutes later, Jonathan sent another message.
Don't mention this to her.
My chest tightened.
He had known there was a billionaire investor named Charlotte Davis.
He had dismissed the possibility that I was her.
Why?
Because I drove a Honda.
Because I rented an apartment.
Because in his mind, someone like me could not possibly be powerful.
But the email about the president's personal reason came later.
"What changed?" I asked.
Elena continued.
"Two weeks after that exchange, Jonathan hired a private investigator."
I sat down.
"For me?"
"Yes."
The room blurred.
"What did the investigator find?"
"We don't have the report yet."
"How do you know?"
"NexoCloud reimbursed the expense."
Of course it had.
Even the investigation into his future wife had been billed to the company.
"Who hired the investigator?"
"Jonathan."
"Purpose listed?"
"Executive security."
I laughed once.
There was nothing funny in it.
Miriam asked, "Can we subpoena the report?"
"Not yet," Elena said. "But the board can demand records related to company expenses."
I looked at Miriam.
"He knew."
"Maybe."
"He knew before the wedding."
"We need proof."
My phone rang.
Jonathan again.
This time I answered.
"Did you know?"
He paused.
"Know what?"
"Who I am."
Silence.
That silence was worse than an answer.
"Jonathan."
"Charlotte, where are you?"
"Did you know?"
"I knew there were things you weren't telling me."
"When?"
"Does it matter?"
"Yes."
"Before we got engaged."
My fingers went numb.
"How much did you know?"
"Not everything."
"Did you know about Vanguard?"
"I suspected."
"Before you proposed?"
"Charlotte, I loved you."
"That isn't what I asked."
"Yes."
The room became completely still.
Miriam heard everything.
I switched the call to speaker and started recording through our legal system after the required notification tone.
Jonathan continued.
"I didn't care about your money."
"Then why didn't you tell me you knew?"
"Because you were testing me."
"So you secretly tested me back?"
"I wanted you to trust me."
"You hired a private investigator."
Silence.
I had my answer.
"How much did you know on our wedding day?"
"Enough."
"Did Florence know?"
"No."
"Gerald?"
Another hesitation.
"Jonathan."
"My father knew you might have money."
"Did he know about Vanguard?"
"Not exactly."
"Did you marry me because of the investment?"
"No."
"Did you believe my position at Vanguard would help NexoCloud?"
"Charlotte, every husband wants his wife to support him."
The sentence made my skin crawl.
"You knew your company was seeking money from mine."
"I hoped if it came down to it, you would help."
"Even though you never told me."
"I thought once we were married, it wouldn't matter."
Everything clicked.
The rush to move the wedding forward.
Jonathan's sudden insistence on marrying before the financing closed.
His father becoming unusually warm during the last month.
Florence telling me family came before everything.
They had not all known the full truth.
But Jonathan had known enough.
"You didn't pass my test," I whispered.
"What?"
"I thought you loved me without knowing about my money."
"I did love you."
"No. You discovered the truth and decided to keep pretending."
"Because I knew you'd run."
"You were right."
"Charlotte."
"We're done."
"Don't do anything with NexoCloud."
There it was.
Not save our marriage.
Not forgive me.
NexoCloud.
"What do you think I can do?"
His voice lowered.
"Don't play games. I know Vanguard suspended the deal."
"I recused myself."
"You own Vanguard."
"And professionals are handling the investment."
"You can fix it."
"If the company deserves investment, they will decide."
"Charlotte, seven hundred jobs depend on this."
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before lying to investors."
His breathing stopped.
"Who told you that?"
I ended the call.
Miriam stared at me.
"He knows we're looking."
"Yes."
"He'll start destroying evidence."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because he still thinks he's the smartest person in the room."
I looked at the time.
9:58.
NexoCloud's board would receive Vanguard's suspension notice in twelve minutes.
May you like
And Jonathan was about to learn that the wife he thought he could manipulate had already stepped completely away from the decision.
The evidence would have to destroy him without my help.
