Chapter 6 - Everything He Thought He Owned
Evan believed marriage gave him permanent access to Clara’s life.
He was wrong.
The banking notification he saw outside the medical center confirmed that Clara had transferred her military pay into a protected individual account. She had not taken any of Evan’s income. She had removed only her salary, her inheritance income, and funds clearly traceable to her father’s property.
The county notification confirmed that the fraudulent trust amendment had been challenged and temporarily suspended.
The credit cards linked to Margaret’s property were frozen.
Evan’s company accounts were under review.
His authority under the power of attorney had been revoked.
Clara had also changed the access codes to Margaret’s house and informed the tenants of the rental properties that Evan no longer represented the family.
There was one more document in the folder.
A petition for legal separation.
When Evan met Clara in a conference room later that morning, his anger had become desperation.
Alicia sat beside Clara. A civilian fraud investigator and a military family liaison were also present.
Evan was allowed to bring an attorney, but he arrived alone.
He leaned across the table.
“You destroyed my company overnight.”
Clara did not react.
“Your company was already collapsing.”
“You moved our money.”
“I moved my money.”
“We are married.”
“That did not authorize you to steal from my mother.”
“I did not steal. It was an investment.”
“An investment she did not understand, approve, or benefit from.”
“She signed.”
Clara placed a tablet on the table and played the kitchen recording.
Evan’s own voice filled the room.

His face changed.
He looked at Alicia, then at the investigator.
“That recording is illegal.”
“It was recorded inside the property owner’s home by her own security system,” the investigator said. “Your concerns can be addressed through counsel.”
Evan stood abruptly.
“This is because of Vanessa.”
Clara finally let her anger show.
“No. Vanessa revealed what kind of husband you were. My mother revealed what kind of man you were.”
“I made one mistake.”
“You made hundreds of decisions.”
“I can repay it.”
“With what?”
“My Denver investors will come through.”
“They withdrew this morning.”
Evan froze.
Vanessa had sent the investors copies of the forged documents and informed them that their funding was tied to disputed property.
Clara slid the separation papers toward him.
“You used my deployments as an opportunity. You used my mother’s age as a weakness. You thought I was too busy serving everyone else to protect my own family.”
Evan looked at the papers.
