Chapter 2 - The Call From the Base
The previous evening, Clara had been confined to Fort Grant during a communications security exercise.
For twelve hours, no one in her unit could leave the installation without direct authorization. Personal calls were restricted, but Clara was permitted to answer when Margaret’s name appeared on her screen.
At first, the video showed only Margaret’s ceiling.
Then Clara heard labored breathing.
“Mom?”
The camera shifted. Margaret’s face appeared, pale and frightened.
“My chest feels heavy.”
Clara stood immediately.
“Sit down. Do not walk. I’m calling emergency services.”
“I called Evan first.”
“Where is he?”
“He said he was at home.”
Clara called Evan while Sergeant Nina Brooks contacted emergency dispatch from another phone.
Evan answered by video.
He was not at home.
He was sitting in a softly lit restaurant booth. Vanessa rested against his shoulder, one hand placed comfortably on his chest. Two wine glasses stood on the table beside an expensive meal.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Vanessa lifted her head.
Evan’s expression changed from surprise to annoyance.
Clara did not ask why Vanessa was touching him.
She did not ask how long they had been together.
She said only, “My mother is having chest pain. You are ten minutes from her house. Go now.”
Evan glanced around the restaurant.
“I’m in the middle of something.”
“Call an ambulance and stay with her until it arrives.”
“She can call one herself.”
“She can barely breathe.”
Vanessa whispered something Clara could not hear.
Evan covered the microphone, listened, then looked back at Clara.
“That’s not my problem. Figure it out.”
Clara stared at him.
Behind her, soldiers stopped moving.
Evan seemed to realize that other people had heard him, but his pride would not let him retreat.
“You are the one who insisted she keep living alone,” he continued. “I am not responsible every time she feels sick.”
Clara’s voice became very quiet.
“Okay.”
She ended the call.
Sergeant Brooks had already reached emergency dispatch. Colonel Hale authorized Clara’s immediate release from the exercise, and a military driver took her to the civilian hospital.
During the forty-minute drive, Clara called Margaret repeatedly.
There was no answer.
She called Evan once more.
He rejected the call.
At the hospital, Clara learned that Margaret had been unconscious when Rosa found her. Doctors said the delay had increased the risk of permanent heart damage.
Clara sat alone in the waiting room until midnight, still wearing her uniform.
That was when she opened Margaret’s purse.
The first overdue notice was from the electric company.
The second involved property taxes.
The third came from an insurance provider that had not received payment in four months.
Clara checked the banking application Evan had installed on Margaret’s phone.
The password had been changed.
She then searched Margaret’s email.
Hundreds of bank alerts had been redirected to a hidden folder. There were transfer confirmations, loan documents, and messages between Evan and Vanessa.
One message from Vanessa read:
Once the house is fully leveraged, we can move forward with the Denver office.
Evan replied:
Clara never checks. Margaret signs whatever I give her.
Clara read the sentence twice.
Then she called Captain Alicia Moore.

By 1:00 a.m., Clara was no longer a wife discovering an affair.
She was an officer documenting a financial crime.
