Chapter 5 - Melissa’s Price

Melissa had spent her entire life standing slightly behind Evelyn.
As children, Natalie fought their mother’s rules while Melissa learned to survive by agreeing with them. Evelyn rewarded obedience with money, attention, and temporary affection.
At thirty-eight, Melissa still lived in an apartment Evelyn owned. Her phone plan, insurance, and credit cards were all connected to their mother.
Evelyn called it family support.
Natalie now recognized it as a leash.
Two days after the lobby incident, Melissa appeared outside Natalie’s office.
She looked as though she had not slept.
“I need to talk to you.”
Natalie led her into an empty conference room but remained standing.
“Where are the documents?”
Melissa placed a brown envelope on the table.
Inside were Lily’s birth certificate and several copied pages from the trust agreement.
“The originals are with Mom,” Melissa said.
“Why did you help her?”
Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.
“She said you were going to move to California and cut us out. She said Lily’s father wanted the family to remain involved.”
“That is not an answer.”
Melissa looked down.
“Mom paid my debts.”
Understanding settled between them.
Evelyn had offered to clear nearly sixty thousand dollars Melissa owed if she helped establish a custody claim. Once Evelyn became Lily’s guardian, she planned to charge the trust for housing, private education, medical care, transportation, and management fees.
“Did you know she put a recorder in Lily’s toy?”
“No. I swear.”
“But you removed her shoes.”
Melissa began crying.
“Mom said the officers wouldn’t take it seriously otherwise.”
“You helped terrify a five-year-old to make a false report look believable.”
“I know.”
“No, Melissa. You are only beginning to know.”
Natalie collected the envelope.
“If you want to make this right, tell the police everything.”
Melissa shook her head immediately.
“Mom will destroy me.”
“She is already destroying you.”
Natalie walked toward the door.
Behind her, Melissa whispered, “I have recordings.”
Natalie stopped.
Melissa explained that Evelyn often dictated instructions by phone and demanded that Melissa replay them to prove she understood. Months earlier, Melissa had begun recording their conversations as protection.
“Protection from what?”

Melissa’s face crumpled.
“From the day she decided I was no longer useful.”
