Chapter 7 - Everyone Pays
Complaints began as soon as the separate bills arrived.
Dennis protested the cost of his wine until the waiter reminded him that he had selected it from the restaurant’s reserve list.
Melissa argued that she had eaten only half her steak.
Evan stared at his bill as if it contained terrible medical news.
Carol refused to open hers.
“I’m the birthday guest.”
Aunt Paula looked directly at her.
“You invited twenty-four people to a dinner nobody agreed to pay for.”
“I thought Sophie would take care of it.”
“That was the problem.”
The statement surprised everyone, including Paula.
Sophie watched her relatives confront an unfamiliar truth.
Silence had a price.
Evan approached her.
“I should have warned you,” he said.
“You did warn me. Then you asked me to surrender.”
“I didn’t want Mom angry at me.”
“So you allowed her to aim at me.”
Evan glanced toward Carol.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophie believed that he regretted what had happened. But regret was easy when the bill had finally reached his own hands.
“An apology matters when your behavior changes.”
Evan nodded.
Carol began crying.
“I gave my entire life to this family.”
Sophie looked at her calmly.
“And then you sent them the invoice in my name.”
Carol finally opened her folder.
Her portion included the custom cake, room rental, flower upgrade, and two bottles of wine she had ordered for herself.
She could not pay the full amount that evening.
Mr. Alvarez offered her a payment arrangement.
Carol called the offer humiliating.
Sophie almost admired the irony.
For once, Carol was experiencing the exact feeling she had deliberately created for her daughter.
Sophie did not reach for her wallet.
