Chapter 5 - Carol’s Toast

When the custom cake arrived, Carol stood and tapped her wine glass.

“I want to thank my daughter Sophie for this beautiful evening.”

Every person in the room turned toward the children’s table.

Carol smiled.

“She may not always show affection in traditional ways, but tonight she has proved how much family means to her.”

Several relatives clapped weakly.

Sophie looked at Evan.

“Did Mom tell you I was paying?”

Evan rubbed his forehead.

“She said the dinner was your gift.”

“And you believed her?”

“I thought you might have changed your mind.”

Aunt Paula leaned closer.

“Carol said you received a huge promotion.”

“I didn’t.”

“She said you bought a second house.”

“I rent an apartment.”

Uncle Dennis frowned.

“She told me the restaurant belonged to one of your clients and the meal was almost free.”

Carol had not told one lie.

She had told a different lie to every person, carefully designed to remove their suspicion and their responsibility.

At the front of the room, Carol raised her glass.

“To Sophie, who finally understands that generosity is more important than pride.”

Sophie stood.

Carol’s smile flickered.

“I’d like to say something too,” Sophie announced.

Before she could continue, the waiter entered carrying the black leather bill folder.

He approached Carol first.

Carol immediately pointed toward Sophie.

“My daughter is handling the check.”

The waiter crossed the room.

That was when Sophie understood Carol’s complete plan.

Her mother had built a public trap.

If Sophie refused to pay, Carol would accuse her of humiliating the family on her birthday.

If Sophie paid, Carol would prove that punishment and shame still worked.

Sophie accepted the folder.

She opened it and saw the total.

Then she looked at the cold fries, the crayons, and the relatives waiting for her surrender.

For the first time, Sophie was no longer afraid of disappointing people who had never been afraid of hurting her.
