Chapter 9 - The Feast Claire Chose

Three months later, Claire stood in a smaller kitchen with no crutch.

Her cast was gone, though she still moved carefully. Sunlight fell across a round wooden table set for eight people.

This time, the food was simple.

Soup, bread, roasted vegetables, and a cake from a bakery.

Margaret arrived first carrying flowers. Elena came next with sparkling water. Two cousins brought salad and fruit. No one expected Claire to serve them. Everyone carried something. Everyone cleaned something.

The gathering was not a celebration of divorce.

It was a celebration of Claire’s first full month in her new apartment and the official approval of the financial settlement.

The house had been sold. The boat was gone. Donald had been forced to accept responsibility for the accounts he opened. Claire recovered part of her savings and kept her bookkeeping clients.

She also began working with a local nonprofit that helped people recognize financial control inside relationships.

During dinner, Margaret raised her glass.

“To the woman who finally said no.”

Claire smiled. “And to the woman who believed her.”

Later, they carried the cake onto the balcony. The frosting leaned slightly to one side. The candles were mismatched. No one cared.

Claire looked around the table.

For years, she had believed love meant anticipating everyone’s needs before acknowledging her own. She had mistaken exhaustion for devotion and silence for peace.

Now she understood something different.

Real love did not require one person to disappear.

When everyone finished eating, Elena stood and collected the plates.

Claire started to rise automatically.

Margaret placed a gentle hand on her arm.

“Stay seated.”

May you like

Claire did.

And for the first time in years, she allowed someone else to take care of her.
