Chapter 5 - The Truth in Front of Everyone
After Claire admitted she had not wanted to cook, Donald’s expression changed.
The friendly smile vanished. His jaw tightened.
“Claire is tired,” he said. “She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
“I know exactly what I’m saying,” Claire replied.
The words surprised even her.
Margaret stepped closer to the kitchen doors. “Tell them what happened.”
Donald raised a hand. “This is ridiculous.”
“No,” Margaret said. “What is ridiculous is my injured daughter-in-law cooking for thirty people while my healthy son drinks beside a swimming pool.”
Several guests looked away. Others stared directly at Donald.
Claire spoke slowly.
“I asked to order food. Donald said catering cost too much. I asked him to help. He said he was busy. He gave me a menu and told me not to make him look cheap.”
A cousin near the pool muttered, “You bought a boat last month.”
Donald turned on him. “Stay out of this.”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed. “How much did the boat cost?”
“That has nothing to do with my birthday.”
“It has everything to do with it.”
Claire felt her strength fading. The room tilted slightly. Margaret noticed and moved toward her, but another guest reached Claire first. It was Elena, Donald’s coworker, who quietly took the platter from Claire’s hands and guided her into a chair.
The act of kindness nearly broke her.
Donald remained outside, surrounded by the people he had wanted to impress.
“Everyone is overreacting,” he said. “Claire could have said no.”
Claire looked at him.
“I did.”
The simple answer landed harder than shouting.
Margaret faced the guests.
“You heard her. This celebration is finished. Please take your belongings and go.”
No one argued.

Donald stood beneath the birthday banner as his perfect party disappeared around him.
