Chapter 8 - Ronald’s Last Performance

Ronald’s final attempt to control Gabriela came during Northstar’s annual education fundraiser.
He arrived without an invitation.
The event was filled with teachers, investors, journalists, and families who used Northstar’s learning tools. Gabriela was scheduled to announce a new scholarship program for children in underfunded schools.
Ronald walked onto the stage before security could stop him.
“My daughter is destroying our family,” he told the audience.
A murmur moved through the room.
Gabriela stood near the podium, perfectly still.
Ronald continued.
“I made sacrifices for her. I raised her. And now she is punishing us over one misunderstanding.”
He expected Gabriela to panic. He expected her to protect the family image.
Instead, she stepped beside him and took the microphone.
“My father is correct about one thing. I did end our financial arrangement.”
Ronald smiled, believing she was surrendering.
Gabriela faced the audience.
“I ended it after discovering forged documents, false invoices, and unauthorized charges totaling more than nine hundred thousand dollars.”
The room went silent.
Maya stood near the stage with two investigators.
Ronald’s face drained of color.
Gabriela continued. “I spent years believing that love required me to tolerate disrespect. Yesterday, my father directed that disrespect at my daughter. That ended everything.”
Ronald reached for the microphone.
Security stopped him.
“You ungrateful child,” he hissed.
Gabriela looked at him without fear.
“I am not a child anymore. And my daughter will never spend her life begging you to love her.”

Investigators escorted Ronald from the room.
This time, everyone saw who he really was.
