Chapter 6 - Vanessa Comes to the House

The next morning, Vanessa arrived at Gabriela’s home carrying the boxed doll.
She rang the bell six times.
Gabriela opened the door but did not invite her inside.
Vanessa lifted the doll with a trembling smile.
“I brought Willow’s present.”
“You brought back what you took from her.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“This family is falling apart because you overreacted.”
“No. It is falling apart because I stopped holding it together with money.”
Vanessa lowered her voice. “Your father is devastated.”
“He called a five-year-old child a mistake.”
“He was angry.”
“So was I. I did not attack a child.”
Vanessa looked past Gabriela into the house. Willow was sitting at the kitchen table, coloring with the housekeeper.
“Let me speak to her.”
“No.”
“I am her grandmother.”
“A title is not permission.”
Vanessa’s hand tightened around the doll box.
“What will people say when they learn you cut off your own parents?”
Gabriela almost laughed. Even now, Vanessa feared embarrassment more than consequence.
“They will learn that I supported you for years. They will also learn why I stopped.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You would expose us?”
“You exposed yourselves in a supermarket.”
For the first time, fear replaced arrogance.
Vanessa set the doll near the door.
Gabriela picked it up and handed it back.
“Willow does not need a gift that carries this memory.”
Then she closed the door.
That afternoon, Gabriela took Willow to a small independent toy store across town. The owner had the same doll in stock.
Willow chose a different one.
“This one has brown hair like you,” she said.
May you like
Gabriela smiled.
The choice felt like freedom.
