Chapter 3 - The Paper Damian Wanted Signed

Valeria picked up the document.

Damian reached for it.

She pulled it away.

"What is this?"

"Something my attorney drafted."

"Why does it mention my son's inheritance?"

Damian stood.

"Because we are married."

"That does not answer the question."

Valeria read faster.

The Calloway Family Trust had been created by Valeria's parents years earlier.

Its primary beneficiaries were Valeria and Elliot.

The amendment in her hand proposed creating shared managerial authority over certain assets.

Shared between Valeria and Damian.

It also included a provision allowing a trustee to delay distributions to a minor beneficiary if the beneficiary demonstrated what the document called serious behavioral instability.

Valeria looked up.

"You want control over Elliot's trust."

"That is not what it says."

"It is exactly what it says."

"It gives us flexibility."

"Us?"

Damian sighed.

"You are reading it emotionally."

"My son's money is not emotional."

"Your son is eight."

"Which is exactly why he needs protection."

Damian walked around the desk.

"Valeria, if something happened to you tomorrow, I would be raising him."

Valeria stared at him.

"Would you?"

The question came out before she could stop it.

Damian's expression hardened.

"Excuse me?"

"You just said Elliot stops being a problem."

"I meant the financial problem."

"There is no financial problem."

"There will be if he grows up spoiled and irresponsible."

Valeria felt something shift permanently inside her.

"You spoke to his teacher."

Damian went still.

"You told her he was exaggerating."

"He was."

"He said he stood in the hallway most of the night."

"He stood for forty minutes."

Valeria stared at him.

"So it happened."

Damian's jaw tightened.

"He lied repeatedly about finishing his schoolwork."

"You made an eight year old stand in a hallway at night."

"I disciplined him."

"Without telling me."

"You undermine every consequence I give him."

"Because your consequences are insane."

Damian's voice rose.

"Do not call me insane in my own house."

Valeria's eyes narrowed.

"Your house?"

Silence.

The property had belonged to Valeria before the marriage.

Damian knew it.

His face changed.

"That is not what I meant."

"No. I think it is exactly what you meant."

She walked toward the door with the document.

Damian caught her wrist.

Not hard enough to hurt.

Hard enough to stop her.

Valeria looked down at his hand.

Then up at his face.

"Let go."

Damian released her.

Immediately.

He smiled.

"I'm sorry."

Valeria did not answer.

"I shouldn't have grabbed you."

"No."

"I am under pressure."

"So am I."

"We are both tired."

"You knew about Elliot sleeping at school."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"I handled it."

"He is my child."

"He is my family too."

Valeria folded the document.

"Then stop treating him like an opponent."

She left.

Damian did not follow.

That night, Valeria slept in the guest room.

At two thirteen in the morning, she woke to a soft sound outside the door.

She opened it.

Elliot stood in the hallway.

Barefoot.

Holding his pillow.

"Can I sleep here?"

Valeria pulled him inside.

He climbed into the bed without another word.

She lay beside him.

For several minutes, she listened to his breathing.

Then she asked quietly, "Has Damian ever hurt you?"

Elliot did not move.

"Sweetheart, you can tell me."

"He doesn't hit me."

Valeria's chest loosened slightly.

Then Elliot added, "He says hitting leaves evidence."

Every muscle in Valeria's body locked.

"What does he do?"

Elliot's breathing became uneven.

"He squeezes my shoulder sometimes."

"How hard?"

"Hard."

"What else?"

"He makes me stand."

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"Anything else?"

Silence.

"Elliot."

"He locks the game room."

Valeria frowned.

"Why?"

"When I'm inside."

Her stomach turned.

"For how long?"

"Until I promise to stop crying."

Valeria sat up.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Elliot looked at her with wet eyes.

"Because he said if I made you choose, you'd get tired of me."

Valeria felt something inside her break.

She pulled him against her.

"Listen to me. There is no world where I get tired of you."

Elliot cried silently against her.

Valeria held him until he slept.

At six in the morning, she entered Beatrice's room.

The bed was empty.

Valeria's heart jumped.

Then she heard movement in the bathroom.

Beatrice emerged fully dressed.

She stopped when she saw Valeria.

"Where are you going?"

"School."

"At six?"

Beatrice shrugged.

Valeria closed the bedroom door.

"I talked to Elliot."

The girl went pale.

"He told me Damian locks him in rooms."

Beatrice said nothing.

"Does your father do things like that to you?"

"No."

Too fast.

"Beatrice."

"No."

"Look at me."

Beatrice kept her eyes down.

Valeria stepped closer.

"I am not angry with you."

"I said no."

"Okay."

Valeria forced herself not to push.

She hugged the girl instead.

Beatrice stood stiffly.

Then suddenly clung to her.

Hard.

For three seconds.

Then she stepped away.

"I have to go."

Valeria let her.

After the children left for school, Valeria searched Damian's office.

She found nothing about discipline.

Nothing about Elliot.

Nothing about Beatrice.

But inside the bottom drawer was a key.

It opened a locked cabinet in the garage.

Inside were copies of financial documents.

Trust papers.

Insurance policies.

Property valuations.

And one envelope marked PERSONAL.

Valeria opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Beatrice's late mother, Catherine.

On the back, someone had written a date.

Six weeks before Catherine died.

Below the date were four words.

ASK WHAT HE DID.

The handwriting belonged to Catherine.
