Chapter 13 - The Daughter Who Stayed

Valeria told her slowly.
She did not say they had won.
Beatrice was not a prize.
Damian was still her father by birth and memory.
The court order did not erase history.
It changed legal rights.
That was all.
And that was enormous.
Beatrice sat at the kitchen table after Valeria finished.
"He's not my dad anymore?"
Valeria considered the question carefully.
"Legally, his parental rights ended."
"But is he still my dad?"
"That is a word you get to decide how to use."
Beatrice looked down.
"Can I still love him?"
"Yes."
"Can I still be mad?"
"Yes."
"Can I never see him again?"
"When you are an adult, you can make choices about contact. Until then, my job is to keep you safe."
Beatrice nodded.
"What if I change my mind?"
"About adoption?"
"Yeah."
Valeria leaned closer.
"Then you tell me."
"You won't be mad?"
"No."
"Sad?"
"Maybe."
Beatrice gave a tiny smile.
"That's honest."
"I am learning."
For three weeks, Beatrice said nothing about adoption.
Valeria did not ask.
One morning, Beatrice came downstairs holding Catherine's letter.
She placed it beside Valeria's coffee.
"I read it again."
Valeria waited.
"Mom said one day someone might love me enough to believe me before I could explain everything."
Valeria's eyes filled.
Beatrice continued.
"I think she meant someone like you."
Valeria shook her head gently.
"She could not have known me."
"I know."
Beatrice smiled.
"But I think she hoped someone would."
Valeria could not speak.
Beatrice took a breath.
"I want you to adopt me."
Valeria stood.
Beatrice immediately added, "But I want to keep Catherine's last name as my middle name."
Valeria laughed through tears.
"You can keep anything you want."
"And I want a picture of her at the ceremony."
"Absolutely."
"And Aunt Laura."
"Of course."
"And Elliot has to stop telling people he's getting an older sister because I'm already older than him."
From the hallway, Elliot shouted, "You're only older by two years."
Beatrice yelled back, "That is still older."
Elliot appeared.
"Are we doing it?"
Beatrice rolled her eyes.
"You were listening?"
"You talk loud."
She smiled.
"Yes."
Elliot threw both arms around her.
Beatrice nearly fell over.
"Get off me."
"No."
"Mom."
Valeria laughed.
"You chose this family."
Beatrice pretended to look horrified.
"I made a terrible mistake."
The adoption process took months.
There were forms.
Interviews.
Background checks Valeria joked seemed absurd after everything they had already survived.
Laura traveled from Oregon.
She brought photographs of Catherine that Beatrice had never seen.
In one, Catherine was seventeen and laughing on a beach.
In another, she was pregnant with Beatrice.
In another, she held her newborn daughter against her chest.
Beatrice studied every image.
"She looks happy."
Laura smiled sadly.
"She was."
"Even with Dad?"
"Sometimes."
Beatrice looked surprised.
Laura understood.
"People can be happy sometimes inside unhealthy relationships. That doesn't make the unhealthy parts less real."
Beatrice nodded.
It was another piece of the complicated truth.
The adoption hearing was scheduled for a Tuesday morning.
Valeria wore the same fitted black pantsuit she had worn on the day at the staircase.
She almost changed when she realized.
Then she decided not to.
That suit did not belong to Damian's worst day.
It belonged to her.
Elliot wore a pale blue shirt.
Beatrice wore a white blouse and dark trousers.
Laura carried Catherine's photograph.
The judge asked Beatrice several questions.
"Do you understand what adoption means?"
"Yes."
"Is this what you want?"
"Yes."
"Has anyone pressured you?"
Beatrice looked at Valeria.
Then smiled.
"No. She actually kept asking if I was sure so many times that it got annoying."
The courtroom laughed.
Valeria covered her face.
The judge smiled.
"That sounds appropriately cautious."
Then came the final question.
"What would you like your legal name to be?"
Beatrice sat straighter.
"Beatrice Catherine Calloway."
Valeria stopped breathing.
Calloway.
Her name.
Elliot's name.
Chosen by Beatrice.
The judge signed the order.
Valeria hugged her daughter.
Laura placed Catherine's photograph on the table beside them.
Beatrice touched the frame.
"She came too."
Valeria kissed her temple.
"She did."
Outside the courthouse, Elliot demanded a family picture.
A stranger agreed to take it.
Valeria stood in the middle.
Elliot on one side.
Beatrice on the other.
Laura beside Beatrice holding Catherine's photograph.
The camera clicked.
For the first time, their family picture did not feel like an attempt to prove they were happy.
They simply were.
Then Beatrice noticed a letter waiting in Marcus's hand.
Her smile faded.
"What's that?"
May you like
Marcus looked at Valeria.
"It's from Damian."
