Chapter 6 - The Prisoner Who Left a Message

Marcus Vale did not die quietly.

Security footage showed him sitting alone inside an interview room.

At 3:11 a.m., he stood.

At 3:12, he looked directly into the ceiling camera.

At 3:13, he removed a metal piece from inside his shoe.

At 3:14, the feed froze.

When guards entered eighty-two seconds later, Vale was dead.

No obvious weapon.

No external intruder.

No clear cause.

But he had written something on the table using blood from his thumb.

MONROE IS NOT THE TARGET.

Rachel read the crime scene photograph twice.

Thomas stood beside her.

Daniel was behind them.

"Then who is?" Daniel asked.

Rachel zoomed in.

There was something beneath the sentence.

A small symbol.

A crown divided by a vertical line.

Thomas went pale.

"That's the mark."

"The ledger?"

"Yes."

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I need someone to explain this without speaking in riddles."

Rachel turned toward him.

She hated how exhausted he looked.

She hated more that part of this was her fault.

"Nine years ago, I commanded a classified coordination unit called Sentinel. We discovered evidence that military operations were being influenced by people outside lawful command structures."

Daniel stared.

"What people?"

"We never identified them."

"Because of Grayhaven?"

"Because Grayhaven destroyed our investigation."

Rachel looked at the photograph again.

"Eleven members of Sentinel were killed during what was reported as a compromised operation overseas. Our files were wiped. The unit was dissolved."

"And you?"

"I survived."

"Why?"

Rachel had asked herself that for nine years.

"I don't know."

Thomas spoke quietly.

"Maybe now we do."

Rachel looked at him.

Thomas continued.

"If Frederick believed you possessed the Crown Ledger, they couldn't kill you until they knew where it was."

Rachel's mouth went dry.

"So they destroyed everyone around me."

Daniel stared at her.

Rachel realized he had never seen this part of her.

Not the deputy director.

Not the officer.

The survivor.

"Did you lose friends?" he asked.

Rachel looked away.

"All of them."

Daniel's anger toward her shifted into something else.

"You never told me."

"I couldn't."

"Couldn't or wouldn't?"

"Both."

That answer hurt him.

Rachel did not soften it.

Before Daniel could respond, Officer Cole entered.

"Deputy Director, there's another issue."

He handed Rachel a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a brass key.

"Found in Vale's mouth."

Daniel grimaced.

Rachel examined it.

Stamped on the head:

W-17.

Thomas said, "Locker key."

Rachel nodded.

"Or deposit box."

They searched Vale's personal property.

Nothing matched.

Then Rachel remembered the photograph from the tunnel.

Seven soldiers.

She enlarged the background.

Behind them stood an aircraft hangar.

On its wall was a row of equipment lockers.

One number was visible.

17.

Rachel looked at Thomas.

"Where was the photo taken?"

He checked.

"Grayhaven staging facility, Bavaria."

Daniel stared.

"Germany?"

Rachel was already moving.

"That facility closed eight years ago."

Thomas followed.

"Officially."

Daniel caught Rachel's arm.

"You're not going to Germany without me."

Rachel looked at his hand.

Then at him.

"This isn't a family investigation."

"My father is the subject."

"Which makes you emotionally compromised."

"My wife is the target."

"Vale said I'm not."

"Exactly."

Rachel stopped.

Daniel continued.

"If you're not the target, maybe I am."

Rachel felt the logic land harder than she wanted.

Victoria had said Frederick returned because he thought Rachel possessed the ledger.

But Vale's dying message contradicted that.

Monroe is not the target.

Then who?

Rachel looked at Daniel.

Frederick's son.

A captain with a stalled career.

A man surrounded by a false family history.

A man General Hayes claimed Frederick's second death had protected.

"Daniel," Rachel said, "what do you know about your father's family?"

"Almost nothing."

"Grandparents?"

"Died before I was born."

"Uncles?"

"No."

"Cousins?"

"No."

Rachel looked at Thomas.

"Run Frederick Whitmore's genealogy."

Thomas began typing.

A minute later, he stopped.

"Rachel."

"What?"

"There isn't one."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas turned the tablet.

Frederick Whitmore's records began at age twenty-two.

Military academy entry.

Before that, scattered documents existed, but none survived verification.

Birth certificate was a late filing.

School records had been reconstructed.

Social Security record issued unusually late.

Rachel stared.

"Frederick Whitmore wasn't born Frederick Whitmore."

Daniel sat down.

For the first time all night, he looked afraid.

Thomas searched alternate identities.

Nothing immediate.

Rachel examined Vale's brass key.

W-17.

"Maybe W isn't Whitmore."

Daniel looked at her.

"What else?"

Rachel thought about the divided crown symbol.

Then a memory surfaced.

An old intelligence briefing.

A Cold War defector program.

Seven identities created for officers inserted into Western command structures.

Code prefix W.

Rachel looked at Thomas.

"Search Warden."

Thomas froze.

Daniel said, "What is Warden?"

Thomas typed.

The result took several seconds.

Then one classified archive header appeared.

PROJECT WARDEN.

ACCESS RESTRICTED.

AUTHORIZED LINEAGE HOLDERS ONLY.

Daniel laughed without humor.

"Lineage?"

Rachel stared at the screen.

The access restriction was not based only on clearance.

It required biological verification.

Thomas looked at Daniel.

Rachel understood.

Frederick's second death had protected Daniel.

Not because Daniel knew something.

Because Daniel was something.

"Run the authorization requirements," Rachel said.

Thomas did.

A genetic qualification field appeared.

Daniel stood.

"No."

Rachel looked at him.

"We need to test you."

"No."

"Daniel."

"You just told me my father wasn't who he said he was, my mother helped fake his death, and now you want my DNA for some secret Cold War project."

"Yes."

He laughed bitterly.

"At least you're finally being honest."

Rachel let the insult pass.

Daniel stared at the Project Warden screen.

Then held out his hand.

"Do it."

Thomas collected the sample.

The secure system processed it through defense medical archives.

Three minutes later, an answer appeared.

BIOLOGICAL LINEAGE CONFIRMED.

WARDEN SUCCESSOR STATUS: ACTIVE.

Rachel felt every instinct in her body warn her.

Then another line appeared.

PRIMARY SUCCESSOR: DANIEL F. WHITMORE.

SECONDARY SUCCESSOR: UNKNOWN.

Daniel whispered, "Successor to what?"

Before Rachel could answer, the screen changed.

A hidden file unlocked automatically.

May you like

Only one sentence appeared.

WHEN THE CROWN FALLS, THE WARDEN COMMANDS THE ARMY THAT DOES NOT EXIST.
