Chapter 5 - The Father Who Died Twice

They found Victoria two hours later.
She was unconscious inside an abandoned signal room near the outer tunnel gate.
No captor.
No Frederick.
No explanation.
She had a concussion, bruising around one wrist, and a small injection mark below her left shoulder.
Inside her handbag, investigators found the storage device taken from Building 19.
Except the device was empty.
Someone had already copied the file.
At 2:30 a.m., Daniel sat alone in a secure medical room watching his mother sleep.
Rachel stood outside with Thomas.
General Hayes had been escorted to temporary command quarters pending federal review.
Marcus Vale refused to speak.
Caroline remained under observation.
The gala had ended.
Guests were sent home with instructions not to discuss the security incident.
By sunrise, everyone would discuss it anyway.
Thomas handed Rachel coffee.
"You look terrible."
"Thank you."
"I work hard at reassurance."
Rachel leaned against the wall.
"What do we have on Frederick?"
"Official death: helicopter crash, Kunar Province, fifteen years ago."
"I know the story."
"Unidentified remains were returned."
Rachel looked at him.
"Unidentified?"
"DNA confirmation was entered into the system."
"By?"
Thomas looked down.
"Army pathology liaison."
"Name."
"Dr. Walter Kern."
Rachel knew the name.
"He worked Grayhaven."
"Yes."
"Alive?"
"Died three years ago."
Rachel looked through the observation glass at Daniel.
"Everyone who can answer a question is dead."
"Vale isn't."
"Vale enjoys questions too much."
Thomas nodded.
"General Hayes?"
"He's afraid."
"Of you?"
"No."
Rachel looked toward the dark corridor.
"Of Frederick."
Inside the room, Victoria woke.
Daniel stood instantly.
"Mother."
Victoria blinked.
She saw him and began crying.
Daniel did not move closer.
"Is he alive?"
Victoria's crying stopped.
"Daniel..."
"Is my father alive?"
Rachel entered.
Victoria looked at her.
Hatred appeared immediately.
"You."
Rachel closed the door.
"Good morning."
"You did this."
Rachel pulled over a chair.
"Which part?"
"You brought all of it back."
"I didn't access Grayhaven with Frederick's credentials."
Victoria stared.
Daniel spoke.
"Tell me the truth."
Victoria looked at her son.
"I wanted to protect you."
"From what?"
"From him."
Daniel's face twisted.
"So he's alive."
Victoria closed her eyes.
Daniel stepped away from the bed as though proximity itself disgusted him.
"Fifteen years."
"I couldn't tell you."
"Fifteen years."
"Daniel."
"You let me stand at a grave."
"I had no choice."
"You brought flowers there every Memorial Day."
Victoria began sobbing.
Rachel watched closely.
This grief was real.
Which meant the deception had hurt Victoria too.
"Start at the beginning," Rachel said.
Victoria looked toward her.
"No."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Someone used your dead husband's credential, lured you into a restricted archive, destroyed a federal facility, assaulted you, and placed a nine-year-old photograph of Frederick in the tunnel."
Victoria said nothing.
Rachel lowered her voice.
"This isn't about protecting Daniel anymore."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"You don't understand what protection costs."
Rachel's expression hardened.
"I've buried people because someone else decided what they were allowed to know. Don't lecture me about cost."
Victoria looked at her.
Something changed.
"That's what Frederick said about you."
Rachel froze.
Daniel stared.
"When?"
Victoria realized her mistake.
Rachel asked again.
"When did Frederick speak about me?"
Victoria looked away.
Rachel's voice became very quiet.
"When?"
"Nine years ago."
The room went silent.
Rachel felt the old wound reopen.
Nine years.
Grayhaven.
Sentinel.
Eleven dead soldiers.
The mission she had believed collapsed because of compromised foreign intelligence.
"Frederick knew me."
Victoria nodded once.
"Not personally. At first."
Rachel sat straighter.
"What did he say?"
"He said you were dangerous because you wouldn't obey the right people."
Thomas stepped into the room.
Rachel raised a hand to stop him from speaking.
Victoria continued.
"He said Grayhaven was supposed to remove a problem."
Rachel understood before Daniel did.
"Me."
Victoria whispered, "Yes."
Daniel turned toward Rachel.
"What?"
Rachel looked at Victoria.
"Grayhaven wasn't meant to bury Frederick."
"No."
"It was meant to bury Sentinel."
Victoria's eyes filled.
"And you."
Daniel stared at Rachel.
"Why?"
Rachel didn't answer.
Victoria did.
"Because she found the ledger."
Rachel looked at her sharply.
"What ledger?"
Victoria appeared confused.
"You don't know?"
"No."
Victoria slowly sat upright.
"Then that's why he's back."
"Who?"
"Frederick."
Daniel swallowed.
"Why?"
Victoria looked at Rachel.
"Because after all these years, he thinks you have something you've never even seen."
Rachel felt cold.
"What?"
Victoria whispered two words.
"The Crown Ledger."
Thomas stopped moving.
Rachel had never heard the term.
But she saw his reaction.
She turned.
"Thomas."
He said nothing.
Rachel stood.
"You know it."
Thomas looked toward Daniel and Victoria.
"Not here."
Rachel's voice hardened.
"You have five seconds."
Thomas exhaled.
"The Crown Ledger is an old intelligence myth."
"That's not an answer."
"It was supposedly a record of unofficial command arrangements between defense officials, intelligence contractors, political intermediaries, and private financial networks."
Daniel frowned.
"Corruption?"
Thomas looked at him.
"Worse."
Rachel understood.
"Control."
Thomas nodded.
"A map of who could order what without appearing in the chain of command."
Rachel stared at him.
"And Sentinel found it?"
Thomas's silence answered.
Rachel stepped closer.
"You knew?"
"I knew rumors."
"When?"
"After Grayhaven."
Rachel's anger rose.
"You worked for me."
"I still do."
"Then stop deciding what I can handle."
Thomas flinched.
Rachel saw something else in his face.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"You saw the ledger," she said.
Thomas whispered, "No."
"But you saw someone who did."
Thomas nodded.
"Who?"
Before he could answer, alarms sounded.
A secure facility warning.
The door locked automatically.
The lights switched red.
Thomas checked his phone.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Rachel asked.
"Marcus Vale."
"What about him?"
May you like
Thomas looked up.
"He's dead."
