Chapter 12 - The Night Her Father Died)

The wedding guests were moved into the garden for cocktails.
They were told there had been a private family emergency.
Rumors spread instantly.
The ceremony was delayed.
Then delayed again.
Inside a small conference room beneath the ballroom, Giulietta stood across from Marco.
"Answer me."
Marco closed the door.
Celeste and Naomi remained outside.
Giulietta repeated the question.
"Where were you the night my father died?"
Marco looked older suddenly.
"Following him."
Giulietta stared.
"What?"
"I followed Luca from Albany."
"Why?"
"He had met Warren."
Her heartbeat changed.
"You told me Dad's investment fight happened months earlier."
"It did."
"Then why were they meeting?"
"Because Luca discovered something."
"What?"
Marco walked to the table and gripped the back of a chair.
"Hale Capital was moving pension money through shell companies."
Giulietta said nothing.
"Your father had evidence."
"Why didn't he report it?"
"He planned to."
"When?"
"The next morning."
Giulietta felt the room tilt.
"He died the night before."
"Yes."
"And you followed him."
"Yes."
"Did you see the crash?"
Marco looked at her.
"No."
"Then what happened?"
"I lost him in the rain."
Giulietta remembered the old police report.
Wet road.
Guardrail.
Vehicle overturned.
"When did you arrive?"
"Maybe four minutes afterward."
"Was he alive?"
Marco's face changed.
"For a little while."
Giulietta's breath caught.
"You were there."
"Yes."
"You never told me."
"You were twelve."
"I'm twenty nine now."
"I know."
"What did he say?"
Marco looked toward the floor.
"Your name."
Giulietta's eyes filled.
"What else?"
"He told me to protect Isabella."
She swallowed.
"And?"
Marco closed his eyes.
"He said Warren knows."
"Knows what?"
"I didn't understand."
"Did you ask?"
"There wasn't time."
Giulietta looked away.
Seventeen years of grief suddenly had a new room inside it.
A room Marco had kept locked.
"Why hide this from Mom?"
"I didn't."
Giulietta turned.
"She knew?"
"Everything."
The betrayal cut deeper.
"She knew you were there?"
"Yes."
"And she let me believe Dad died alone?"
Marco's voice cracked.
"She thought knowing would make you obsessed with his final minutes."
"She was right."
"I know."
Giulietta stepped away from him.
"Did you see Warren that night?"
"No."
"Any Hale car?"
"No."
"Then Warren's question proves nothing."
Marco looked at her.
"It proves he knew I was following Luca."
"How?"
"Exactly."
They stared at each other.
Someone had told Warren.
Either Luca himself.
Or someone watching both men.
Giulietta thought of Patrick.
Thomas.
Old company records.
Then Marco said, "There's more."
She laughed bitterly.
"Of course there is."
"After the crash, I found something in Luca's coat."
He removed his wallet.
Inside was a tiny brass key.
Old.
Worn.
"I've carried this for seventeen years."
Giulietta stared.
"What does it open?"
"I never knew."
"You never tried?"
"For years."
"And?"
"Nothing."
"Why are you showing me now?"
"Because three months ago, Bellafonte replaced the old lockers beneath the east wing."
Giulietta frowned.
Marco placed the key on the table.
"The maintenance supervisor recognized the manufacturer."
Her pulse accelerated.
"What kind of locker?"
"Safe deposit cabinet."
"Where?"
"Grand Central."
Giulietta stared.
"You found it?"
"Yesterday."
"What was inside?"
Marco opened his phone.
A photograph showed a sealed brown archive box.
"He left instructions that it could only be opened by Isabella or you."
"Where is it?"
"Naomi's office."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because yesterday you were preparing to walk into a room with Preston and a golf club."
Giulietta nearly shouted.
"You don't get to decide what truth I can handle."
Marco accepted the anger.
"No."
He placed the key in her palm.
"I don't."
Silence.
Giulietta closed her fingers around it.
"When do we open the box?"
"Now."
Naomi's office was forty minutes away.
They did not leave Bellafonte.
Instead, Naomi had an assistant bring the sealed box under escort.
At three fifteen in the afternoon, while wedding guests drank champagne outside and social media speculated about a runaway bride, Giulietta opened the last thing her father had left behind.
Inside were paper ledgers.
A voice recorder.
Three envelopes.
And a handwritten letter.
TO ISABELLA. IF SHE CANNOT READ THIS, GIVE IT TO GIULIETTA WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE WHAT TO DO WITH THE TRUTH.
Giulietta's hands shook.
She opened it.
Luca's letter was nine pages.
He described Warren Hale's hidden debt structures.
The pension scheme.
Payments to doctors.
Political donations routed illegally.
Threats.
He also described something Giulietta did not expect.
Warren had tried to recruit Luca.
Not deceive him.
Recruit him.
For several months, Luca had considered joining.
He had nearly done it.
Giulietta read the confession twice.
Her father was not the flawless hero family stories had created.
He had been tempted.
He had ignored warning signs.
He had profited before his conscience caught up.
The truth hurt.
But it felt clean.
Human.
On page eight, Luca wrote:
If Warren learns I kept these records, he may try to frighten me. I do not believe he would kill me. But I have made the mistake of believing his limits before.
Giulietta stopped reading.
Naomi turned on the recorder.
Luca's voice filled the room.
Older than Giulietta remembered.
Calm.
"September fourteenth. Warren said if I go to regulators, he will make sure Isabella loses the hotels and Marco goes to prison for the Naples acquisition. Those threats are false. I am recording this because fear grows strongest when nobody names it."
Giulietta closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
Then a second voice appeared.
Warren Hale.
Clear.
"If you force me into a corner, Luca, I will take everything you love before you can blink."
Marco whispered, "Jesus."
The tape ended.
Giulietta looked at Naomi.
"Enough?"
"For a murder case? No."
"I didn't ask that."
Naomi understood.
"For fraud, coercion and a pattern of financial crimes?"
She looked at the box.
"Potentially devastating."
Giulietta sat back.
Her father had preserved Warren's past.
Patrick had exposed his present.
Celeste proved his methods.
And Warren had just attempted to steal forty eight million dollars on Giulietta's wedding day.
For seventeen years Warren had survived because each victim possessed only one piece.
Now all the pieces were in one room.
Giulietta looked toward the garden where the guests still waited.
"I think it's time."
Marco frowned.
"For what?"
May you like
"To end the wedding."
This time, nobody tried to stop her.
