Chapter 11 - The Signature That Was Real)

The wedding guests never heard Giulietta's announcement.
Not yet.
Marco's phone rang before she reached the ballroom doors.
He looked at the screen.
Then at Giulietta.
"Don't move."
"What happened?"
He answered.
The call lasted twenty three seconds.
Marco's expression became darker with every word.
When he hung up, Naomi asked, "What?"
"Forty eight million transferred from Marconi Hospitality."
Naomi went still.
"When?"
"Seven minutes ago."
"Authorization?"
"Giulietta."
Giulietta shook her head.
"I didn't authorize anything."
"They say your biometric signature validated."
"Impossible."
Marco looked at Naomi.
"What does that mean?"
Naomi answered slowly.
"The approval wasn't forged."
Giulietta felt her stomach tighten.
Every major Marconi transfer required a digital signature token linked to her biometric authentication.
Fingerprint plus device.
Nobody could simply copy it from a document.
"Where did it originate?"
Marco listened to another message.
"Bellafonte network."
Everyone looked around.
The transfer had been approved from inside the wedding venue.
Giulietta thought immediately of her phone.
It was upstairs.
Inside the bridal suite.
Preston.
She turned.
Marco caught her arm.
"No."
"My phone."
"Security will get it."
Naomi was already calling Elliot.
Giulietta's mind raced.
Her fingerprint could not be recreated easily.
But during hair and makeup that morning she had unlocked her phone dozens of times.
Had someone watched?
No.
Authentication still required her actual finger.
Then she remembered.
The champagne glass.
Not today.
Three nights earlier.
At the rehearsal dinner Preston had taken her phone from the table to show a photograph to his father.
She had assumed he handed it back.
For perhaps thirty seconds it had been out of sight.
Could a device have been cloned?
Naomi ended her call.
"The transfer is pending final settlement."
"Can we stop it?"
"Possibly."
"Where is it going?"
"North Atlantic Private Bank."
The emergency management vehicle.
Exactly as predicted.
"But why now?" Marco asked.
Giulietta understood.
"Warren knew the wedding might collapse."
Naomi nodded.
"So he moved first."
Security returned with Giulietta's phone.
She examined it.
Nothing unusual.
Then Elliot called Naomi.
His words made the room silent.
"The authentication wasn't from her current device."
Naomi frowned.
"Then how?"
"Backup recovery key."
Giulietta stared.
"What recovery key?"
"Created six years ago."
She knew immediately.
"My mother."
When Isabella became ill, the family had established emergency recovery codes for executive accounts.
Only four people knew where they were stored.
Giulietta.
Marco.
Thomas Bell.
Patrick Dorsey.
Patrick was cooperating.
Marco was standing beside her.
Thomas.
Giulietta looked at Marco.
"Where is Thomas?"
Marco pulled out his phone.
The general counsel had attended the wedding.
He had been seated at table six.
Security searched.
His chair was empty.
His car was gone.
Naomi swore softly.
"We had the wrong traitor."
Patrick had supplied templates.
But someone else had given Warren the one thing that could actually move money.
Thomas Bell.
Giulietta's father's old legal associate.
The man who had read a eulogy at Isabella's funeral.
Marco called him.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Then Giulietta's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at her.
She answered.
"Hello?"
Thomas Bell spoke.
"I'm sorry."
Giulietta closed her eyes.
"Where are you?"
"Don't ask me."
"Did you move forty eight million dollars?"
"Yes."
Marco stepped closer, listening.
Giulietta put the call on speaker.
"Why?"
Thomas breathed heavily.
"Warren has my daughter."
Marco's face changed.
"What?"
"Not physically."
Thomas corrected himself.
"Financially."
Naomi frowned.
"Explain."
Thomas continued.
"My daughter is under investigation for insider trading."
Giulietta knew Thomas had one child.
Rebecca.
Thirty one.
A securities analyst.
"Warren has documents that could send her to prison."
Naomi said, "If she committed a crime, blackmail doesn't improve that."
"You don't understand."
"Then help us understand."
Thomas sounded close to breaking.
"Warren caused it."
Silence.
"He fed her the information."
Naomi's face sharpened.
"Then recorded her trades?"
"Yes."
"He created leverage over you."
"Yes."
Giulietta gripped the phone.
"Thomas, cancel the transfer."
"I can't."
"You initiated it."
"Warren has the receiving control."
"Then give Naomi everything."
Thomas did not answer.
"Thomas."
"I'm sorry, Giulietta."
"You held my hand when my mother died."
His voice cracked.
"I know."
"Then don't make your betrayal the last thing I remember about you."
A long silence.
Then Thomas whispered a number.
Naomi wrote it down.
"What is that?"
"North Atlantic account freeze code."
Naomi immediately called the bank's emergency desk.
Thomas continued.
"The money hasn't cleared yet."
"How long?"
"Nine minutes."
Naomi was already moving down the hallway.
Marco followed.
Giulietta stayed on the phone.
"Where are you?"
Thomas whispered, "Warren will kill me."
"No."
"Not literally."
His laugh sounded broken.
"He doesn't need to. He destroys everything around people."
Giulietta looked at Celeste.
She understood better than anyone.
"Come back."
"I can't."
"Yes, you can."
"Why would you forgive me?"
"I didn't say I would."
Thomas became silent.
Giulietta continued.
"But you can still decide what the final thing you do is."
Three minutes later, Naomi returned.
"Freeze submitted."
"Did it work?"
"Unknown."
They waited.
Sixty seconds.
Two minutes.
Three.
Finally Elliot called.
"Transfer stopped."
Marco exhaled.
Giulietta closed her eyes.
Forty eight million dollars remained frozen between banks.
Safe for now.
But Warren's plan had failed visibly enough that investigators no longer needed patience.
Naomi approached Preston, who still stood near the bridal hallway.
"Where is your father?"
Preston looked exhausted.
"I don't know."
"Call him."
"He won't answer me."
"Try."
Preston did.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Then Celeste's phone rang.
Everyone turned.
She looked down.
Warren.
For the first time in fourteen years, her husband was calling her directly.
Celeste answered.
"Warren."
His voice was loud enough for Giulietta to hear.
"You think you've won?"
Celeste's face became calm.
"No."
She looked at Giulietta.
"I think she has."
Warren laughed.
Then he said something that erased the victory from every face in the hallway.
"Ask Giulietta where Marco was the night Luca died."
The call ended.
Giulietta slowly turned toward her uncle.
May you like
Marco did not speak.
And the silence told her Warren had not invented the question.
