Chapter 15 - The Woman Behind the Glass

The photograph arrived one hour later.
No sender. No metadata. No message.
It showed a woman standing behind reinforced glass in a white room marked 412.
She looked exactly like Emily.
Not similar.
Not related.
Exact.
Same scar above the eyebrow. Same dark hair. Same gold key around her neck.
The only difference was her eyes.
They were open, but empty.
Laura sat down when she saw the image.
“That’s impossible.”
Emily watched her mother carefully.
“You said that before.”
Laura admitted that after the childhood synchronization, Victor proposed creating a biological backup: not a clone in the theatrical sense, but an embryo selected and altered to replicate key genetic markers. Laura claimed she refused and destroyed the project.
Victor may have continued.
Eleanor, recovering in a secure hospital, confirmed the woman’s existence.
“Her name was Anna,” she said over encrypted video. “She was born eight months after the Room 412 trial. Victor kept her hidden. Adrian found her years later.”
“Why does she look my age?”
“She is younger. The conditioning makes her mimic you.”
Emily felt ill.
The woman was not a copy.
She was a person trained to disappear inside someone else’s identity.
Eleanor said Anna had escaped once and contacted her. She believed Adrian planned to use Anna if Emily died or became uncontrollable. With enough forged records and memory alteration, Anna could inherit Emily’s legal identity.
“Where is she now?” Reed asked.
Eleanor looked toward the camera.
“Crown.”
The Swiss clinic denied having any patient by that name. Satellite records showed unusual power usage beneath the building. Federal agencies prepared a coordinated operation, but jurisdictional delays consumed precious hours.
Crown synchronization continued.
Twelve hours.
Victor sent a message to Emily from an unknown number.
Do not let Laura reach Anna first.
Laura received a different message.
Victor wants Custodian Zero dead.
Adrian sent both of them the same final instruction.
Come to Geneva. Room 412. One mother. One daughter. One replacement. Only two leave.
Emily boarded a federal aircraft with Reed and Maya. Laura boarded separately despite orders to remain behind.
Daniel stayed at the command center, monitoring the four linked sites.
During the flight, he called Emily.
“I found something in Anna’s file.”
“What?”
“Her birth mother.”
Emily waited.
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“The record says Laura Vale.”
Emily turned toward the rear of the aircraft.
Her mother’s seat was empty.
The bathroom door stood open.
A service hatch in the floor had been unlocked.
Laura was gone.
The pilot shouted from the cockpit.
Another aircraft had appeared beside them without transponder lights.
On Emily’s phone, a live video opened.
Laura stood inside the dark aircraft across the clouds.
Beside her was Victor.
And behind them, seated beneath a white light, was the woman from Room 412.
Anna lifted her head.
For the first time, emotion entered her eyes.
She looked directly at Emily through the camera.
Then she spoke in Emily’s own voice.
“Mom told me you stole my life.”
The transmission ended.
Daniel called again, breathless.
“Emily, Crown just changed its primary custodian.”
The cabin lights flickered.
Every screen displayed a new identification.
CUSTODIAN ZERO: ANNA VALE.
Then the aircraft began descending without the pilot touching the controls.

Far below, beyond the black water, the lights of Geneva appeared.
And somewhere beneath the city, Room 412 was waiting.
