Chapter 14 - The Door My Mother Opened

Emily confronted Laura at the lighthouse.
The underground laboratory was active. Servers hummed. On the main screen, a map showed a pulsing line from Switzerland to an unknown location in the Atlantic.
Laura stood at the console.
“You accessed Crown.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To find the remaining systems before Victor trades them for immunity.”
“You told me the research was quarantined.”
“The public branch was.”
Emily walked closer.
“What are you doing?”
Laura faced her.
“Finishing what I failed to finish twenty-two years ago.”
She believed the remaining systems were controlled by a consortium of private clinics, intelligence contractors, and wealthy investors. Adrian had been their operator, not their leader. With him arrested, the consortium would disappear unless Laura activated Crown and traced every node.
“It could expose them,” Laura said.
“Or wake them.”
“I know.”
“You did it anyway.”
Laura’s eyes filled with the same conviction Emily remembered from childhood. It had once made her seem heroic. Now it looked dangerously close to obsession.
“The world cannot be protected by leaving weapons hidden,” Laura said.
“It cannot be protected by one person deciding who gets to use them.”
For a moment neither spoke.
Then alarms sounded.
The Atlantic signal changed course.
A video window opened.
Adrian appeared on the screen from a prison medical unit.
He was supposed to be under constant surveillance.
Yet he sat alone.
“Hello, Emily,” he said.
Laura reached for the shutdown control.
The button did nothing.
Adrian smiled.
“Crown was waiting for Laura. She always believed she was the hunter.”
The screen split into four live feeds.
A clinic in Geneva.
A ship at sea.
A desert facility.
A school dormitory.
People slept in rooms connected to neural induction devices.
Emily’s blood ran cold.
“What do you want?”
“You know what I have always wanted. Custodian Zero.”
“You’re in custody.”
“Am I?”
The prison feed flickered.
The man on screen removed a thin prosthetic layer from his face.
It was not Adrian.
A guard entered the fake medical room and discovered the deception, but the live feeds continued.
Adrian’s voice came through the speakers from an unknown location.
“Your mother opened the door. You will come through it.”
Laura tried to sever power to the laboratory. Backup systems activated.
A timer appeared.
CROWN SYNCHRONIZATION: 24:00:00.
Twenty-four hours until the four remaining sites linked permanently.
Daniel called from the city.
“Emily, there’s another problem. Victor disappeared during transfer.”
Reed spoke in the background.
“Someone hit the convoy. Professional team.”
Emily looked at Laura.
“Did Victor arrange Crown?”
Laura shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Eleanor’s recorder, sitting on a shelf, began playing by itself.
A new file had appeared.
Eleanor’s voice said, “If you are hearing this, Laura has opened Crown and Victor is free. Trust neither of them until you find the woman in Room 412.”
Emily picked up the recorder.
“What woman?”
The file continued.
“She has your face.”
Before boarding the aircraft, Emily visited Eleanor one last time.
The old woman removed the silver recorder from beneath her blanket.
“There are seven files I never gave Laura,” she said.
“Why?”
“Because your mother believes truth belongs to the person brave enough to find it. Victor believes it belongs to the person powerful enough to hide it. Adrian believes it belongs to the person skilled enough to rewrite it.”
“And you?”
Eleanor placed the recorder in Emily’s hand.
“I believe truth belongs first to the people who paid for it.”
The seventh file was locked. Its label read ANNA INTERVIEW.
Emily tried the key, her voice, and her fingerprint. Nothing opened it.
Eleanor said, “It will unlock when Anna is near.”
On the plane, the recorder warmed in Emily’s pocket before the video transmission began. When Anna appeared beside Laura and Victor, the seventh file opened automatically.
A child’s voice played through Emily’s earpiece.
“My name is Anna. They tell me Emily is the copy and I am the original. They tell Emily the opposite. One of us is a key. One of us is a door. I do not know which one I am.”
Emily listened while the aircraft descended beyond the pilot’s control.
The recording ended with a second voice.
Laura’s voice.
“If both girls survive, Crown cannot choose between them.”
Emily looked through the window at the dark aircraft flying beside them.
Anna stood behind the glass with one palm raised.
Emily raised hers.
For a moment they mirrored each other across open sky.
Then Anna turned her hand and revealed words written across her palm.
DO NOT LAND.
Below, the runway lights shifted from white to red.
The pilot fought the controls.
Maya opened the emergency equipment locker. Reed contacted ground teams. Daniel shouted through the phone that Crown was rewriting the aircraft navigation system in real time.
Emily gripped Eleanor’s recorder.
Inside it, another hidden file began to play.
Victor’s voice said, “There were never two girls.”
May you like
The aircraft dropped through the clouds.
And the truth waiting in Room 412 became more dangerous than the crash.
