Chapter 5 - The House on Willow Lane

Police reached Evelyn Cole's house twelve minutes later.

The front door stood open.

Nothing appeared stolen.

There were no signs of struggle.

Evelyn was gone.

On the dining table sat two cups of coffee.

Still warm.

One contained lipstick.

The other did not.

Claire ordered a full forensic sweep.

Nathan wandered through the house in stunned silence.

Richard entered the study.

Charles Cole had once spent hours there.

Family photographs still lined the shelves.

Nathan graduating college.

Emily and Nathan's wedding.

Christmas dinners.

Charles holding a fishing rod beside Richard ten years earlier.

Richard studied that picture.

Charles had been smiling.

Richard suddenly hated the photograph.

Nathan appeared beside him.

"You knew my father."

"Not well."

"He knew about your military past?"

"Most people did."

"But Winter Lantern?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

Richard looked at him.

"I stopped being sure about anything this morning."

A forensic technician called from the hall.

They had found a hidden compartment behind a bookshelf.

Inside was a small safe.

Nathan knew the combination.

His mother's birthday.

The safe opened.

No money.

No jewelry.

Only passports.

Seven passports.

Three belonged to Charles Cole under different names.

One belonged to Evelyn.

Two belonged to Daniel Mercer.

The seventh belonged to Michael Mercer.

Claire lifted it carefully.

Expiration date: four years ago.

Richard stared at the photograph.

Michael looked older than he remembered.

But alive.

Nathan whispered, "My parents were helping him."

"Or hiding from him," Claire said.

There was also a notebook.

Most pages contained numbers.

Dates.

Coordinates.

The final page contained one sentence.

RICHARD HAYES NEVER KNEW KATHERINE WAS THE COURIER.

Richard stared.

Nathan looked at him.

"Your wife?"

Richard sat down.

Katherine had been an elementary school librarian.

She baked terrible pies.

She cried during war movies.

She hated guns.

At least, that was the woman Richard believed he had married.

"What does courier mean?" Nathan asked.

Richard did not answer.

Claire opened another drawer.

Inside was a photograph.

Katherine Hayes stood beside Evelyn Cole.

Both women looked much younger.

Behind them was a military transport aircraft.

The year printed on the edge was 1998.

Richard whispered, "Katherine told me she had never met Evelyn before Emily's wedding."

Nathan looked at him.

"My mother said the same thing."

Claire flipped the photo.

Words were written on the back.

LANTERN TEAM - CIVILIAN CHANNEL.

Richard's chest tightened.

His wife had been part of Winter Lantern before Richard ever received the assignment.

Claire said quietly, "Your wife wasn't just a librarian."

Richard stared at Katherine's smile.

For the first time in eleven years, he felt angry at a dead woman.

Then Nathan found something beneath the passports.

A cassette tape.

On it were three words.

FOR RICHARD ONLY.

They found an old cassette player in the basement.

Richard inserted the tape.

Static.

Then Katherine's voice filled the room.

"Richard, if you're hearing this, then the Mercer problem didn't end."

Richard closed his eyes.

Katherine continued.

"I lied to you."

Nathan sat silently.

"I was recruited in 1997 as a civilian translator and records courier for a compartmentalized intelligence program. I met Evelyn Cole there. Charles was involved too."

Richard's hands began shaking.

"We discovered that money meant for humanitarian operations was being redirected. Weapons, identities, medical records. People were disappearing and then reappearing under new names."

Claire whispered, "Identity laundering."

Katherine's voice continued.

"Daniel Mercer was involved, but he wasn't in charge."

Richard leaned toward the machine.

"Michael was."

The room went still.

"Michael built the system. Daniel handled money. Charles handled identities. Evelyn provided hospital records."

Nathan turned pale.

"My mother."

Katherine continued.

"When Winter Lantern exposed part of the network, Michael ordered the civilians killed. Anton Vale survived because I warned him."

Richard stared.

Katherine had known the survivor.

"I gave Anton part of the ledger. I kept the rest."

Richard breathed, "Where?"

The tape crackled.

"If Emily is ever threatened, the ledger is no longer hidden where I left it."

Richard frowned.

Katherine continued.

"Because Emily moved it."

Richard stood abruptly.

Nathan looked at him.

"Emily?"

May you like

The recording ended with one final sentence.

"And Richard, if Michael Mercer is alive, do not trust Alan."
