Chapter 14 - The Empty Bed

Richard reached the military hospital twenty-six minutes later.
Emily's room was empty.
Nathan was unconscious on the floor.
No blood.
A sedative injection mark in his neck.
Two guards had been found unconscious in a service corridor.
Security footage showed a medical transfer team entering with perfect credentials.
Emily left on a stretcher.
Nobody challenged them.
The vehicle plates belonged to a federal medical transport agency.
Fake identities inside real systems.
Michael's specialty.
Richard stood beside the empty bed.
He felt rage.
Then something else.
Fear.
Not battlefield fear.
A father's fear.
Sarah entered behind him.
"This is because of me."
Richard turned.
"No."
"He wants me."
"He wants control."
"Then trade me."
"No."
"Richard."
It was the first time she had used his name without the title.
He looked at her.
"If Katherine was really my mother, Emily is my sister."
Richard said nothing.
Sarah's eyes filled.
"I won't let her die because you're trying to protect me."
Richard answered quietly.
"I've spent seventeen years watching people destroy themselves in the name of protecting family."
He looked at the empty bed.
"We're doing something different."
Daniel, under guard in another hospital, provided the next clue.
Michael maintained fallback properties.
One was an old country estate owned through a trust.
The property had once belonged to Katherine's family.
Richard recognized the location.
Blackwood House.
Katherine had spent summers there as a child.
Police surrounded the estate before dawn.
Inside they found signs of recent occupation.
Blood.
Medical equipment.
Emily's hospital blanket.
But Emily was gone.
On the dining table sat a tape recorder.
Richard pressed play.
Emily's voice.
"Dad."
He closed his eyes.
She sounded weak.
"If you're hearing this, I'm okay."
Richard opened his eyes.
"He made me record this."
A man's voice spoke in the background.
Continue.
Emily breathed.
"He wants the coordinates."
Richard looked toward Sarah.
Emily continued.
"He says Mom lied to everyone."
A pause.
"But I don't think that's why he brought me here."
Richard leaned closer.
Emily's voice lowered.
"There's someone else in the house."
Michael's voice snapped.
Stop.
The recording cut.
Claire searched upstairs.
She found a hidden bedroom.
Children's drawings covered one wall.
Dates from twenty-five years earlier.
A little girl had lived there.
Sarah.
Inside the closet they found Katherine's handwriting.
Short notes written directly on the wall.
SARAH SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT.
MICHAEL CAME AGAIN.
EVELYN SAYS WE MUST MOVE HER.
RICHARD CAN NEVER KNOW.
Sarah cried silently.
Then Richard found another line.
Smaller.
Almost hidden behind a shelf.
IF MICHAEL FINDS OUT EMILY ISN'T HIS ONLY CHILD, EVERYTHING ENDS.
Richard stared.
Claire read it twice.
"His only child?"
Sarah whispered, "That doesn't make sense."
Richard felt the answer approaching before he could stop it.
Katherine had written Emily.
Not Sarah.
Claire slowly looked at him.
"Richard."
He did not answer.
The implication was impossible.
Emily was Richard's daughter.
He had never questioned it.
Not once.
Then Sarah found an envelope beneath the floorboard.
Inside were two DNA reports.
One for Sarah.
One for Emily.
Richard's hands shook as he opened them.
Sarah Mercer.
Biological father: Michael Mercer.
Biological mother: Katherine Hayes.
Richard opened the second report.
Emily Hayes.
Biological mother: Katherine Hayes.
Biological father:
May you like
The line had been cut away.
Someone had physically removed the name.
