Chapter 7 - The Bride Returns)

The ballroom doors opened at eight forty-three.
Guests expected an announcement about the fire alarm.
Instead, Elise walked in.
Clara was beside her.
Gabriel followed several steps behind.
The bruise on Elise's cheek was becoming more visible.
She made no attempt to hide it.
Whispers spread across the room.
Julian entered with his parents.
Hotel security remained discreetly near the doors.
No music played.
Elise walked to the center of the dance floor.
Someone offered her a microphone.
She took it.
Julian's face hardened.
"What are you doing?"
Elise ignored him.
She looked at the guests.
"Thank you for coming tonight."
The room fell quiet.
"This is not the speech I planned."
A few nervous smiles appeared.
Elise continued.
"I thought tonight was the beginning of a marriage."
Her voice almost broke.
She steadied it.
"It was not."
Julian moved toward her.
Gabriel stepped between them without a word.
Julian stopped.
Elise continued.
"Less than three hours after our ceremony, I discovered that documents connected to my inheritance had been prepared using a signature I did not provide."
A murmur moved through the crowd.
Victoria whispered furiously to Conrad.
Elise looked at Julian.
"I also discovered that my husband's family intended to use those assets as financial collateral."
Julian spoke loudly.
"These are complicated business matters she does not understand."
Several guests turned toward him.
Elise smiled sadly.
"That sentence has been used a lot tonight."
Julian tried to approach again.
Gabriel remained where he was.
Elise continued.
"When I refused to give Julian financial records, he pulled me into another room."
Her fingers tightened around the microphone.
"He struck me."
Gasps spread through the hall.
Julian shouted, "It was an accident."
Elise looked at him.
"No."
That single word silenced him more effectively than shouting would have.
"You told me I made you do it."
Julian stared.
Clara stood near the sound system.
She lifted her phone.
Julian realized what was about to happen.
"Do not."
Clara pressed play.
His recorded voice filled the ballroom.
Where is the drive?
Elise's voice followed.
Open the door.
Then Julian.
Give it to me.
A pause.
Then the sharp sound of impact.
Guests recoiled.
Julian's voice followed.
Look what you made me do.
Clara stopped the recording.
No one spoke.
Julian looked around the room.
Many of his friends would not meet his eyes.
Several of his father's business partners were already typing messages.
Victoria moved toward Elise.
"Turn that off."
Gabriel stepped in front of her.
Victoria looked up at him.
"Move."
"No."
"That is my son's wife."
"Not for long."
The room reacted again.
Conrad finally took the microphone from a nearby stand.
"This spectacle ends now."
Gabriel turned.
Conrad faced the guests.
"My daughter-in-law has clearly experienced an emotional shock. Financial documents were misunderstood. A private argument escalated. We will deal with it as a family."
Elise laughed.
Conrad looked at her.
"What exactly is funny?"
"You still think you decide when this ends."
Conrad's phone rang.
He silenced it.
Then it rang again.
And again.
His chief financial officer approached from the edge of the room.
"Conrad."
"Not now."
"You need to see this."
Conrad glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
Gabriel watched quietly.
The CFO whispered, "Aurelius suspended the bridge facility."
"I know."
"No. They suspended all pending draws."
Conrad looked at Gabriel.
"You said the review concerned Elise's trust."
"It began there."
"What else did you do?"
"Nothing."
Conrad laughed without humor.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Gabriel remained calm.
"Your lenders have contractual rights. If they are acting, perhaps they found reasons."
The CFO whispered again.
"Two other banks are requesting collateral confirmations."
Conrad's face drained.
Victoria stared.
"What does that mean?"
No one answered.
Elise suddenly understood.
The flash drive had not merely contained evidence about her.
It contained something capable of unraveling the entire Wycliffe organization.
Tomas entered the ballroom.
Every Wycliffe face turned toward him.
Conrad's voice dropped.
"You."
Tomas stood beside Helena.
"You should have listened when I warned you."
Conrad stepped forward.
"You stole company records."
"I preserved evidence."
"Of what?"
Tomas looked around at the guests.
"Would you like the short version?"
Helena touched his arm.
"Perhaps not publicly."
Gabriel nodded.
"This is no longer a wedding matter."
Conrad pointed toward him.
"You have been waiting for this."
Gabriel's expression changed.
"For my daughter to be attacked on her wedding night?"
"No. For Wycliffe Holdings to stumble."
"You overestimate your importance."
A few guests audibly inhaled.
Conrad's pride was legendary.
Gabriel had struck it cleanly.
Julian stepped around his father.
"This is about money."
Elise looked at him.
"You still do not understand."
"It is always about money with your father."
Gabriel looked almost tired.
Julian continued.
"He is using you to take revenge because he never wanted you to marry me."
Elise's eyes narrowed.
"My father never told me not to marry you."
"Because he manipulates without speaking."
Gabriel said nothing.
Julian turned toward the guests.
"Ask him who he is."
Elise stared at Julian.
He laughed bitterly.
"Go ahead. Ask him why a supposedly retired businessman can freeze a billion dollars with one phone call."
Guests turned toward Gabriel.
Conrad looked furious now.
Victoria looked frightened.
Elise looked at her father.
"Maybe it is time."
Gabriel met her eyes.
He had spent years refusing interviews, awards, public profiles, and magazine covers.
After Marianne died, power had become boring to him.
Family had not.
But hiding had consequences too.
Tonight his silence had allowed arrogant people to mistake restraint for weakness.
Gabriel took the microphone from Conrad.
"My name is Gabriel Bellamy."
He paused.
"Thirty-two years ago, I founded Aurelius International Capital with three partners."
The ballroom fell completely silent.
Several bankers in the room exchanged shocked looks.
Gabriel continued.
"I remain its controlling shareholder."
Conrad closed his eyes.
Now everyone understood.
Gabriel looked at him.
"Wycliffe Holdings currently owes institutions controlled or represented by Aurelius approximately four hundred and eighty million dollars."
Victoria grabbed Conrad's arm.
"What?"
Gabriel continued.
"That debt will be treated according to contract."
Conrad looked up.
"And if we cannot satisfy your review?"
Gabriel handed the microphone back.
"Then your problem is not me."
His gaze moved to Julian.
"It is the truth."
Before Conrad could respond, Helena's phone vibrated.
She read the message.
Then looked at Gabriel.
"The forensic team found Athena."
Tomas went pale.
Elise remembered the folder.
Project Athena.
"What is it?"
No one answered immediately.
May you like
Then Tomas looked at her.
"Something worse than your forged signature."
