THE MAN THEY CALLED NOBODY / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - The First Lie Breaks)

Elise felt the last pieces of her marriage rearrange themselves inside her.

Not break.

Breaking was sudden.

This felt more precise.

Like a building being dismantled floor by floor while she was still standing inside it.

Clara whispered, "Bathroom."

Elise shook her head.

Running would tell Julian everything.

She slipped the flash drive back beneath the lining of her gown and opened the door.

Julian stood alone.

At least he appeared to be alone.

"You have ten seconds to explain why you are following me around your own wedding," Elise said.

His eyes moved past her.

"Why are you in Clara's room?"

"Because she had aspirin."

"Interesting."

"Why?"

"Because I just asked hotel security to check her minibar charge. She has not ordered anything."

Clara stepped forward.

"You checked my minibar?"

Julian ignored her.

"Where is Keller's drive?"

Elise looked at him.

"What drive?"

His jaw tightened.

"Do not play games."

"You accused me of rebellion during our first dance. Your father told me to sign documents before you lose patience. Now you are searching hotel rooms."

"I am trying to protect us."

"From what?"

"From Keller."

"What did he do?"

Julian glanced toward the corridor.

"Not here."

Elise folded her arms.

"No. Here."

Clara moved to Elise's side.

Julian looked between them.

"Keller stole confidential company files."

"What kind of files?"

"Financial records."

"Why?"

"He has been embezzling."

Elise almost admired how easily the lie came.

"How much?"

"What?"

"How much did he embezzle?"

Julian hesitated.

"You would have to ask finance."

"You just told me he did it."

"I do not know every detail."

"Then how do you know the files he took are false?"

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"I never said they were false."

Elise said nothing.

He realized the mistake.

Too late.

Clara quietly stepped behind her.

Julian lowered his voice.

"Give me the drive."

"No."

"Elise."

"No."

"Do you understand what is at stake?"

"Nine hundred million dollars?"

Everything in him stopped.

There was no explanation necessary after that.

No possibility of misunderstanding.

Julian knew she knew.

He walked into the room and closed the door behind him.

Clara reached for her phone.

Julian noticed.

"Put that down."

Clara did not.

"You should leave."

"This is between my wife and me."

"Your wife looks like she wants witnesses."

Elise held up a hand.

"It is fine."

It was not fine.

But she needed Julian talking.

"What happened to Wycliffe Holdings?"

Julian paced toward the window.

"Markets changed."

"Nine hundred million dollars is not a market change."

"You do not understand our structure."

"I understand multiple pledging."

He turned sharply.

Elise continued.

"I understand forged signatures."

Julian's face changed.

Only for a second.

But now she knew.

"You knew."

"I did not forge anything."

"You knew."

"I knew my father had contingency documents prepared."

"With my signature?"

"You were going to sign."

"That does not make forgery legal."

"Stop using words you do not understand."

Elise almost laughed.

"I design hospitals, Julian. I manage contracts larger than some companies. Do you really think I cannot read a balance sheet?"

"This is exactly why my mother warned me."

"Warned you about what?"

"That you would become impossible once we married."

Elise stared.

"Once we married?"

He exhaled.

"You twist everything."

"No. I am finally hearing it."

Clara said quietly, "Elise, we should go."

Julian blocked the door.

"You are not leaving."

Clara raised her phone.

"Move."

He looked at her screen.

She was recording.

Julian smiled.

"Do you think a video of a husband arguing with his wife is going to matter?"

Elise watched him.

"You sound very confident."

"I know how the world works."

"No. You know how your family works."

His smile faded.

Elise walked closer.

"What is Project Athena?"

Julian's face went blank.

It was the strongest reaction yet because it was the reaction of someone trying not to react.

Elise continued.

"Private Payments?"

He said nothing.

"BELLAMY?"

"Enough."

"Why is my name inside your father's hidden accounting?"

Julian stepped toward her.

Clara moved between them.

"Back up."

Julian stopped.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His father.

Julian answered.

"What?"

Conrad's voice was loud enough for Elise to hear.

"Where is she?"

"With me."

"Has she seen it?"

Julian looked at Elise.

"Some."

A pause.

Conrad's voice returned.

"Get the drive."

The call ended.

Elise felt an unexpected clarity.

Her fear remained.

But confusion had disappeared.

"Thank you."

Julian frowned.

"For what?"

"For confirming this is bigger than the trust documents."

"You have no idea what you are talking about."

"Then explain Project Athena."

He did not.

Elise stepped toward the door.

Julian blocked her again.

"Move."

"We are going back downstairs together."

"No."

"You will smile. You will cut the cake. We will finish the reception."

"And then?"

"We talk privately."

Elise's pulse increased.

"No."

His expression hardened.

"You are my wife."

"That sentence does not mean what you think it means."

Clara opened the adjoining room door.

"Elise."

Julian reached for Elise.

Clara shouted.

Elise jerked away.

The movement tore a small section of lace at her shoulder.

All three froze.

Julian looked at the torn fabric.

Then at Elise.

His anger disappeared instantly.

He became gentle.

"Look what you made happen."

Elise stared at him.

The sentence was so revealing that she would remember it for the rest of her life.

Look what you made happen.

Not what I did.

Not I am sorry.

Not are you hurt.

He reached toward the torn lace.

Elise stepped back.

"Do not touch me."

Julian's eyes changed.

Clara moved to call hotel security.

Then someone pounded on the hallway door.

A male voice shouted from outside.

"Mrs. Wycliffe?"

Elise recognized one of the hotel security officers.

"Yes."

"We need to speak with you."

Julian opened the door.

Two security officers stood outside.

Between them was Tomas Keller.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His glasses were gone.

And fear covered his face.

Elise rushed toward him.

"Tomas."

He looked at Julian and flinched.

One officer said, "We found him in a locked administrative storage room on level four."

Clara stared.

"Locked?"

Tomas looked at Elise.

"I did not lock myself in."

Julian spoke immediately.

"He is confused."

Tomas's eyes hardened.

"No."

He reached inside his jacket.

One of the security officers tensed.

Tomas slowly removed an envelope.

He handed it to Elise.

"This is why they need your signature tonight."

Elise opened it.

Inside was a copy of a banking agreement.

At the top appeared a name she had heard many times growing up but had never connected to the Wycliffes.

Aurelius International Capital.

At the bottom, beneath a line identifying the ultimate controlling principal, was another name.

Gabriel Bellamy.

Elise stared at it.

"My father?"

Tomas nodded.

"Your husband's family does not know who actually controls the debt."

Julian went pale.

May you like

Tomas looked directly at him.

"But they are about to find out."
