Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Returned from the Dead

Laura Hawthorne refused to speak at the harbor.

She carried no identification and claimed not to remember her name.

Medical staff transported her to a private hospital under police guard.

Ethan stood outside her room for nearly an hour before entering.

Maya waited beside him.

“You can go in alone.”

“I don’t know if I can.”

She took his hand.

“Then you don’t have to.”

Ethan looked through the narrow window in the door.

Laura sat upright in bed, staring toward the rain.

Twelve years had changed her.

Her face was thinner. A pale scar ran from her right temple into her hairline. Her hands trembled slightly in her lap.

But she was alive.

Ethan opened the door.

Laura turned.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

“Ethan.”

He froze.

The doctors had said she remembered nothing.

Laura reached toward him.

“My boy.”

Ethan stepped into the room.

“Where have you been?”

Her hand fell.

“I’m sorry.”

“Twelve years.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

Laura looked at Maya.

“You married her.”

The statement made Maya uneasy.

“How did you know?”

Laura’s gaze moved to the pendant around Maya’s neck.

“Eleanor always said it would return to the right woman.”

Maya touched the silver keyhole.

“You knew my grandmother.”

“She saved my life.”

Ethan remained near the door.

“Start at the beginning.”

Laura closed her eyes.

The night before the aircraft departed, Adrian discovered that Victor Sloane and several trustees planned to take permanent control of Hawthorne Global.

They intended to use the flight as an opportunity to eliminate the family members capable of challenging them.

Adrian secretly changed the passenger list.

Most of the family boarded a different aircraft under false names.

The original plane carried company operatives who volunteered to create the appearance that the Hawthornes were aboard. They were supposed to land at a remote airfield and disappear into protective custody.

But the plane never reached the airfield.

Someone sabotaged it despite the change in passengers.

“Who died?” Ethan asked.

Laura’s voice broke.

“Six people who trusted your father.”

“Where was Adrian?”

“He left separately.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Victor found us before we could reunite. He threatened everyone connected to us. We scattered.”

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

Laura looked at Marcus.

“He was supposed to take Ethan away.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“I did.”

“You never told him?”

“I was ordered not to.”

Ethan turned toward Marcus.

“You knew she survived?”

“For three weeks.”

The betrayal hit Ethan visibly.

Marcus continued.

“Then all contact stopped. I believed she had been killed.”

Laura shook her head.

“Victor moved me between facilities. He convinced me Ethan would die if I tried to escape.”

“Yet you arrived with him today,” Maya said.

Laura looked ashamed.

“I escaped three months ago. Victor found me again. He said he would take me to Ethan if I helped him recover the Concord evidence.”

“The documents beneath Hawthorne House,” Marcus said.

“Yes.”

“Why did he attack the chapel?”

Laura looked toward Ethan.

“He didn’t.”

Everyone fell silent.

“Victor wanted the wedding delayed,” she continued. “He planned to expose Ethan’s identity publicly and frighten Maya away. But he did not authorize the stained-glass collapse.”

“How can you know?” Maya asked.

“Because when it happened, Victor panicked. He said someone else had entered the game.”

Ethan crossed his arms.

“Who?”

Laura looked at the locked door.

“The person who created Concord.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Concord was a file.”

“No,” Laura said. “Concord was an organization.”

She explained that decades earlier, Sebastian Hawthorne had formed a private alliance of industrial leaders, intelligence officers, political donors, and researchers.

Publicly, they financed infrastructure and scientific advancement.

Privately, they acquired land containing rare geological deposits, experimental energy sites, and strategic underground networks.

The eastern coastal property controlled by Eleanor had been their most important target.

“What is beneath the land?” Maya asked.

Laura looked directly at her.

“I never saw it. Adrian did.”

“And?”

“He said if Concord gained access, no government would be able to control what followed.”

A nurse entered and announced that the police had finished questioning Victor.

Marcus left the room.

When he returned, his face was grim.

“Victor is dead.”

Ethan stared.

“How?”

“He collapsed during interrogation. Poison capsule hidden inside a dental crown.”

Laura began shaking.

“He was afraid.”

“Of prison?”

“No.”

She looked toward the window.

“He knew Concord had found him.”

The lights in the hospital flickered.

A message appeared on the dark television screen.

WELCOME HOME, LAURA.
