THE MAN AT THE CHAPEL DOOR / Chapter 11 / 16

Chapter 11 - When the Ground Began to Move

The sound began beneath Maya’s feet.

A deep metallic hum traveled through the chamber.

Lights ignited around the enormous ring one section at a time.

Control screens displayed equations Maya did not understand consciously, yet some part of her recognized their structure.

They resembled puzzles Eleanor had taught her as a child.

Patterns of threes.

Reversed sequences.

Numbers arranged according to tides.

Sebastian moved toward the controls.

“Step away.”

Maya blocked him.

“You said my grandmother designed this security.”

“She did.”

“Then she didn’t want you using it.”

Alarms sounded.

The ring began rotating.

Richard held the railing as the floor vibrated.

On the screens, warning symbols appeared across a map of the coastline.

Sebastian entered commands, but the system rejected them.

ACCESS TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.

“What did you do?” he demanded.

“I inserted the key.”

“You initiated Eleanor’s succession protocol.”

Maya looked at the screen.

A new line appeared.

AUTHORIZED CUSTODIAN: MAYA ELEANOR BENNETT HAWTHORNE.

Richard stared at her new married name.

The system had identified the marriage.

That was why the wedding had to be completed.

Eleanor’s protocol required the legal union of two family branches.

Maya descended from Eleanor.

Ethan descended from Adrian.

Together, their marriage activated the succession process.

Sebastian’s voice became urgent.

“Stop the transfer.”

“How?”

“Remove the pendant.”

Maya reached for it.

The panel locked around the silver keyhole.

REMOVAL PROHIBITED DURING TRANSFER.

The underground chamber shook violently.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

A steel door opened at the far end.

Ethan and Marcus ran inside.

Ethan crossed the platform and reached Maya.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“She activated the engine,” Sebastian said.

Marcus aimed his weapon at him.

“Move away from her.”

Armed teams entered through the tunnel behind them.

Some pointed weapons at Sebastian.

Others pointed weapons at Marcus.

No one appeared certain which side controlled the chamber.

A woman in a white suit stepped forward.

Maya recognized her as Celeste Ward, the chief executive who currently managed Hawthorne Global on behalf of the trust.

She had attended congressional hearings, economic conferences, and international summits.

Publicly, she was one of the most respected business leaders in the country.

Privately, she was Concord’s new commander.

“Sebastian,” Celeste said, “your time has ended.”

Sebastian faced her.

“You attacked the chapel.”

“You left us no alternative.”

“You nearly killed the custodians.”

“The glass was intended to stop the ceremony, not kill them.”

Maya’s anger surged.

“People were injured.”

Celeste barely looked at her.

“Acceptable collateral damage.”

Ethan stepped toward her.

“You should choose your next words carefully.”

Celeste smiled.

“You abandoned billions to teach evening classes. Your judgment has never impressed me.”

She addressed the armed teams.

“Kill Sebastian. Detain the others.”

Half the soldiers raised their weapons.

The other half turned against them.

Gunfire erupted.

Marcus pulled Maya and Ethan behind the control platform.

Richard crawled beneath a walkway.

Sebastian disappeared behind the engine housing.

The chamber filled with smoke and sparks.

The Meridian Engine rotated faster.

Warnings flashed across every screen.

GEOGRAPHIC STABILITY FAILURE.

TRANSFER REQUIRES SECOND CUSTODIAN.

Maya looked at Ethan.

“The system needs you.”

They ran to the opposite control panel.

A scanner illuminated Ethan’s hand.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Ethan pressed his palm against the glass.

SECOND CUSTODIAN ACCEPTED.

The engine slowed.

A countdown appeared.

TRANSFER COMPLETE IN 60 SECONDS.

Celeste saw it.

She shot one of Sebastian’s guards and ran toward Maya.

Marcus intercepted her.

They struggled near the edge of the platform.

Celeste struck Marcus with the weapon and aimed at Maya.

Richard emerged from beneath the walkway.

Without hesitation, he stepped between them.

The gun fired.

Richard fell.

Maya screamed.

Celeste tried to fire again, but Ethan knocked the weapon aside.

Marcus forced her to the floor and restrained her.

The countdown reached zero.

The engine stopped.

Every weapon in the chamber deactivated simultaneously.

The security system had taken control.

A calm recorded voice filled the room.

“Custodial transfer complete.”

Maya knelt beside Richard.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Richard looked at her with unfocused eyes.

“I walked too late,” he whispered.

Maya pressed both hands against the wound.

“Don’t talk.”

“I should have walked with you.”

“You can tell me later.”

He tried to smile.

“For once… you sound like your mother.”

Medical personnel rushed toward them.

As they lifted Richard onto a stretcher, Sebastian emerged from the smoke.

Celeste, still restrained, laughed.

“You think she controls Concord now?”

Sebastian looked at the active screens.

“No.”

May you like

Celeste’s smile widened.

“She controls only the part we allowed her to find.”
