Chapter 12 - The Person Who Ordered the Crash)

Dr. Malcolm Vale did not confess because of guilt.

He confessed because Bianca's attorneys blamed him first.

Within six hours of detention, Vale decided loyalty had become expensive.

His statement filled twenty-eight pages.

According to Vale, Bianca had asked him to provide medical access to Adrian's recovery records.

That was illegal.

Then she asked him to exaggerate Adrian's neurological damage.

More illegal.

Sebastian knew about the false incapacity documentation.

He claimed he did not know about anything more.

Then came the accident.

Vale said Bianca had not personally cut the brake line.

She had paid another man to arrange a vehicle malfunction.

She had described it as a way to delay Adrian's trip home.

"She said he should be frightened," Vale told investigators. "She said an injury would buy time."

The mechanic she hired later admitted he had been told to create a failure that would occur after several hours of driving.

He claimed he never intended the car to go over a barrier.

The law did not care much about his intention by then.

Bianca was arrested.

Not at the estate.

At the airport.

She had attempted to leave on a flight using a second passport.

Mara watched the news without satisfaction.

She had expected relief.

Instead she felt tired.

Adrian sat beside her.

"How do you feel?"

"I don't know."

"That's allowed."

"I wanted her stopped."

"She is."

"I thought that would make everything quiet."

"Sometimes quiet comes later."

Mara rested her head against the couch.

"What happens to Sebastian?"

"Depends what prosecutors prove."

"He helped forge the medical records."

"Yes."

"He helped hide me from you."

"Yes."

"But he didn't order the accident."

"According to Vale."

Mara looked at him.

"Do you hate him?"

Adrian answered slowly.

"I don't know what to do with him."

The next day Sebastian surrendered documents voluntarily.

He resigned from all Moretti companies.

He waived his claim to any future controlling vote.

Then he asked to speak with Mara.

She almost refused.

In the end she agreed.

They met in Nathan's conference room.

Sebastian looked different without the tailored armor of his usual life.

No jacket.

No watch.

No assistant.

"I won't ask you to forgive me."

"Good."

"I knew Bianca was manipulating the situation."

Mara waited.

"I didn't know how far she would go."

"You knew enough to stop her earlier."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

Sebastian stared at the table.

"Because every lie benefited me."

Mara said nothing.

He looked up.

"That's the truth I kept avoiding."

She appreciated that he did not call himself weak.

Weakness could sound accidental.

His choices had not been accidents.

He continued.

"I grew up believing Adrian had everything because people loved him more."

Adrian, seated across the room, looked away.

Sebastian gave a tired smile.

"It never occurred to me that they trusted him more because he kept choosing responsibility when I kept choosing resentment."

Adrian looked back.

The brothers stared at each other.

Years lived inside the silence.

Sebastian placed a document on the table.

"I signed this this morning."

Mara looked at it.

A transfer agreement.

Sebastian had assigned his personal interest in one of the family's apartment properties to a restitution fund.

"For employees harmed by Bianca's private staffing practices," he said.

Mara frowned.

"What staffing practices?"

Nathan answered.

"Mara wasn't the only employee recruited because Bianca believed they could be controlled through debt."

Mara felt sick.

"How many?"

"At least eighteen."

Bianca had targeted people with medical bills, immigration expenses, family debt, or unstable housing.

Not because they were bad employees.

Because she believed desperate people complained less.

Mara looked at Sebastian.

"Use the money to help them."

"That's the plan."

"Not charity."

He nodded.

"Restitution."

"Good."

Sebastian stood to leave.

At the door Adrian spoke.

"Sebastian."

He turned.

Adrian's voice was quiet.

"I don't know if I'll ever trust you again."

Sebastian swallowed.

"I know."

"But I don't want to spend the rest of our lives hating you."

Sebastian's eyes filled.

"That may be more than I deserve."

"It's not about deserve."

He left.

Mara looked at Adrian.

"You meant that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I almost died with years of anger I had never said out loud."

He sat beside her.

"I don't want my child inheriting that."

Mara looked at her stomach.

For the first time, the trust did not feel like a threat.

May you like

Because Adrian had just shown her something more important than the money.

He was willing to end the cycle that created the fight over it.
