Chapter 11 - Eleanor Collins Left One Last Witness)

Mara's mother had died of cancer.
That had never been in doubt.
But death did not mean nothing had been hidden.
Nathan reopened Eleanor's medical records with Mara's permission.
The answer did not appear in test results.
It appeared in billing.
Three months before Eleanor died, an anonymous foundation had paid nearly forty thousand dollars toward private home care.
Mara had never known.
The payment originated from the Vale Medical Foundation.
Dr. Malcolm Vale.
Mara stared at the document.
"Why would he pay for my mother's nurse?"
Emma answered.
"To put someone near her."
Everyone turned.
Emma stood in Nathan's office holding an old tablet.
"What do you know?" Adrian asked.
Emma looked at Mara.
"Your mother called the estate once."
Mara stared.
"When?"
"Before you started working there."
"Why?"
"She asked for Adrian."
Mara gripped the table.
"She knew who he was?"
"Apparently."
"How?"
Emma handed her the tablet.
"I don't know. But I saved the voicemail because Bianca told me to delete it."
Adrian looked sharply at Emma.
"You disobeyed Bianca?"
"I've been employed by rich people for twenty-six years. Saving evidence is how one reaches year twenty-seven."
Mara pressed play.
Eleanor's voice filled the room.
Weak.
Breathless.
But unmistakable.
"My name is Eleanor Collins. I'm Mara Collins's mother. I need to speak with Adrian Moretti. I don't know if he knows someone is lying to my daughter. A woman came here today asking about Mara. She said Adrian had ended things. But she knew details she shouldn't know. Please tell him Mara never asked for money. She never even knew his last name until I found a newspaper photograph. Please tell him before they hurt her."
The message ended.
Mara cried silently.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Emma touched Mara's shoulder.
"There's more."
She opened another file.
A security camera clip from the estate service entrance.
The date was months earlier.
Bianca stood talking to a woman in nursing scrubs.
Mara recognized her.
"Nurse Hall."
The private nurse who had cared for Eleanor twice a week.
Nathan located her within hours.
Her name was Rebecca Hall.
She had retired to Connecticut.
At first she refused to speak.
Then Nathan mentioned Dr. Vale.
Rebecca went silent.
Finally she agreed to meet.
They drove to her house the next morning.
Rebecca opened the door already crying.
"I knew this day would come."
Mara felt Adrian tense beside her.
They sat around a small kitchen table.
Rebecca placed both hands around a cup of untouched tea.
"Dr. Vale hired me."
Mara said, "He wasn't my mother's doctor."
"No."
"Then why?"
"To listen."
"For what?"
"Anything your mother knew about Adrian."
Mara's anger rose.
Rebecca continued.
"I hated it. Your mother was kind. She knew I was reporting to someone by the second week."
"She knew?"
"She started feeding me false information."
Despite everything, Mara almost smiled.
That sounded like Eleanor.
Rebecca wiped her eyes.
"One night she asked me who paid me. I told her."
"Vale."
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"She made me promise something."
Rebecca stood and opened a cupboard.
From the back she removed a small metal box.
"I've kept this for eight months."
Inside was a memory card.
Mara stared.
"What is it?"
"Your mother's old phone recordings."
Adrian leaned forward.
Rebecca said, "Eleanor recorded a conversation between Vale and Bianca when they visited the house."
Mara whispered, "They came together?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Your mother pretended to be asleep."
Nathan inserted the card into a laptop.
The recording began with footsteps.
Then Bianca.
"If Adrian wakes before the paperwork is complete, Sebastian loses his chance."
Vale replied, "The crash bought time."
Mara felt Adrian go still.
Bianca said, "Don't call it that."
Vale laughed.
"What should I call it?"
"A correction."
Then Eleanor coughed in the background.
The voices stopped.
The recording ended.
No direct confession of cutting the brakes.
But close.
Very close.
Rebecca covered her face.
"I should have gone to the police."
Mara's voice was quiet.
"You were afraid."
"That's not an excuse."
"No."
Rebecca looked up.
Mara continued.
"But telling the truth now matters."
Outside the house Adrian stood beside the car in silence.
Mara joined him.
"My mother tried to protect us."
"Yes."
"She knew who you were before I did."
"That doesn't surprise me."
Mara smiled faintly.
"She thought you were either organized crime or rich."
Adrian looked at her.
"Which did she prefer?"
"She wasn't sure."
For the first time in days, they laughed.
Then Daniel approached.
His expression ended the moment.
"Police found Vale."
Adrian straightened.
"Where?"
"At a private airfield."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
May you like
Daniel paused.
"And he's talking."
