THE LOCKED OFFICE / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - THE COURTROOM TRUTH

The custody hearing took place four days before Christmas.

Ross wore a gray suit and maintained a wounded expression. Gwendolyn sat behind his attorney, avoiding Corinne’s eyes.

Miriam presented the porch recordings first.

Ross’s edited video showed Corinne questioning him about the locked office.

Corinne’s complete recording showed what came before it: Casey’s warning, the mark on her wrist, Gwendolyn ordering Corinne to leave, and Ross trying to control the child.

Then Miriam played the hidden-camera footage.

The courtroom watched Gwendolyn gripping Casey’s wrist.

They heard Ross say, “Don’t leave a mark before she gets here.”

Ross lowered his head.

The judge paused the video.

“Mr. Hardy, did you know this camera existed?”

Ross’s attorney advised him not to answer.

The judge continued.

“You submitted edited material to this court while concealing evidence that directly contradicted your claims. You attempted to use a child’s fear as a weapon against her mother.”

Miriam then presented the financial records, forged documents, and messages between Ross and Gwendolyn.

One message read:

Once Corinne reacts, we file immediately.

Another said:

Casey only has to repeat the story once.

Ross claimed the statements were taken out of context.

The judge did not believe him.

Corinne received immediate temporary sole custody, later to become permanent after a full evaluation. Ross’s visitation was suspended pending the criminal case and psychological assessment.

Gwendolyn was ordered to have no contact with Casey.

The emergency protection order against Corinne was dismissed.

Before ending the hearing, the judge looked at her.

“Major Hardy, your restraint on that porch protected both your daughter and your case.”

Corinne answered quietly.

“My daughter protected me first.”
