THE LOCKED OFFICE / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - THE EARLY RETURN

Three weeks earlier, Corinne Hardy had been sitting inside a military transport terminal in Germany when she received the message that changed everything.

Deployment rotation adjusted. Approved for early return.

She read the order twice before allowing herself to smile.

For nine months, she had lived through short calls, delayed messages, and unstable video connections. Most nights, Casey appeared on screen for less than five minutes. Sometimes Ross claimed she was sleeping. Other times, he said she was having a tantrum.

Corinne had tried not to question him.

Marriage during deployment required trust, patience, and the ability to accept what could not be controlled.

Still, small things had begun to trouble her.

Casey had stopped asking when she was coming home.

During their last video call, the child had stared nervously toward someone outside the camera frame.

When Corinne asked whether everything was all right, Ross had ended the call.

Bad connection, he later wrote.

Corinne decided not to tell him about her early return. She wanted to surprise Casey before Christmas. She imagined arriving at the house with the teddy bear, hearing tiny feet race across the floor, and holding her daughter until the months apart finally disappeared.

She contacted only one person: Captain Leah Morgan, her closest friend and legal liaison on base.

“I’ll be home on December twentieth,” Corinne said.

“Does Ross know?”

“Not yet.”

Leah was silent for a moment. “You sound worried.”

“I’m tired.”

“That isn’t what I said.”

Corinne looked through the terminal windows at the gray runway.

“I think something changed while I was gone.”

Leah told her to trust her instincts.

Corinne promised she would.

She arrived in Kansas on a rainy evening, still wearing her formal uniform after a military ceremony in Washington. She rented a car and drove through Overland Park while Christmas lights blurred across the wet windshield.

Her house appeared warm and familiar from the street.

But there was a yellow car parked in her driveway.

It belonged to Gwendolyn.
