Chapter 3 - The Sentence That Stopped the Ballroom)

By seven forty five, the reception was overflowing.

Grace tried to remain invisible.

Lily stayed close, holding the edge of her apron whenever guests passed.

Adrian Morrell arrived shortly after eight.

Grace had seen him in photographs, but in person he seemed less polished than the magazines suggested.

He was tall, broad shouldered, dressed in a navy blazer rather than a tuxedo.

He greeted guests warmly but often glanced toward Vanessa.

Each time he did, his expression softened.

Grace felt an unexpected sadness.

Whatever Vanessa was doing, Adrian believed the child was real.

That made what Grace knew feel crueler.

At eight twenty, Mrs. Alden sent Grace upstairs for additional linen napkins.

Grace did not want to leave Lily.

"Come with me."

They entered the east corridor together.

Vanessa's room was closed.

Grace kept walking.

Then she noticed a man coming from the far end of the hall.

She recognized him from the photograph.

Samuel Voss.

Older now.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

He wore a tuxedo.

Grace stopped.

Voss saw her.

Neither spoke.

Then he turned and entered a door marked private.

Grace pulled Lily into the linen room.

Her hands were shaking.

"Mommy?"

"I'm fine."

She was not.

Why was a disgraced doctor secretly attending Adrian Morrell's reception?

Grace took the napkins.

As she turned to leave, Lily pointed toward a shelf.

"That's the man from the picture."

Grace froze.

"What picture?"

"The one in Miss Vanessa's drawer."

"What drawer?"

"The day I saw the bellies."

Grace crouched.

"You said you didn't touch anything."

"I didn't. It was open."

"What picture?"

Lily thought carefully.

"The belly lady. The old man. And that man."

Richard Morrell.

Samuel Voss.

Vanessa.

Together.

Grace suddenly understood why the public photograph had bothered her.

Vanessa's connection to the Morrell family was not accidental.

She had entered Adrian's life after Richard died, but she had been orbiting the family for years.

On the way downstairs, Grace saw Vanessa standing near the ballroom doors.

Their eyes met.

Vanessa walked toward her.

"You brought her."

"My childcare fell through."

"I told you to come alone."

Grace's stomach tightened.

So Vanessa knew about the message.

"You sent it."

Vanessa's face did not change.

"Give me the report."

"What are you doing to Adrian?"

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with."

"You're not pregnant."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Keep your voice down."

"Does he know?"

"Grace."

"Does Adrian know?"

For the first time Vanessa's confidence cracked.

"Some truths hurt more than lies."

"That isn't an answer."

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

Grace immediately moved between them.

Vanessa noticed.

"I would never hurt a child."

"Someone photographed her."

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

That was enough.

"You knew."

"I didn't order that."

"Who did?"

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

Samuel Voss had appeared above them.

Then she whispered, "Leave this house."

Grace stared.

Vanessa's voice became urgent.

"Take Lily and leave right now."

It was not a threat.

It was a warning.

Before Grace could answer, Adrian called Vanessa's name from the ballroom.

Vanessa turned toward him.

Her entire face changed.

Fear vanished.

Warmth returned.

She walked away smiling.

Grace stood frozen.

Lily tugged her hand.

"Mommy."

"Yes?"

"Her belly is bigger."

Grace looked.

Lily was right.

Two days earlier Vanessa had been wearing the prosthetic labeled MONTH SIX.

Tonight the curve was dramatically larger.

Perhaps MONTH SEVEN.

The absurdity of it struck Grace.

The entire room was admiring a child that did not exist.

Adrian placed his hand on Vanessa's back.

A photographer captured them together.

Vanessa leaned against him.

Grace watched Adrian touch the false belly.

That was when Lily slipped from her hand.

Only two steps.

Grace reached for her too late.

Lily walked directly toward Vanessa.

Adrian noticed her first.

He smiled.

"Well, hello."

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Then at Adrian.

Then she pointed.

"That beautiful lady's belly is just a pillow."

Grace's heart stopped.

The nearest guests turned.

Vanessa went white.

Adrian's smile remained for half a second.

Then disappeared.

The next minutes unfolded like a nightmare.

Vanessa denied everything.

Adrian demanded an explanation.

Grace admitted seeing the box.

Lily mentioned the changing belly.

Then the brass key fell.

Adrian recognized it.

Grace did not understand why his face changed so dramatically.

She only knew the key frightened him more than the fake pregnancy.

Then the lights went out.

When emergency power returned, Vanessa was gone.

So was Samuel Voss.

And the key had disappeared from Adrian's hand.

Security locked the estate gates within three minutes.

Nobody left.

But Vanessa could not be found.

Her car remained outside.

Her phone lay beneath a ballroom table.

The prosthetic belly from beneath her gown was discovered ten minutes later inside a service bathroom.

For the first time, there was no question.

Vanessa Clarke had never been pregnant.

Yet something more disturbing happened upstairs.

Adrian led security to his father's private archive.

The door was open.

Inside, every cabinet remained locked except one.

A single file had been removed.

According to the handwritten inventory card, the missing file had a title.

PROJECT SECOND SON.

Adrian read the words twice.

Then he turned toward his aunt Eleanor.

"What is this?"

Eleanor Morrell looked as though she had seen a ghost.

"I don't know."

Adrian stared at her.

She avoided his eyes.

May you like

And Grace understood something immediately.

Eleanor was lying too.
