Chapter 12 - The Doctor Everyone Trusted

Sarah refused to believe it.

"Michael saved those babies."

Lisa placed the access logs on the table.

"He opened Grace Miller's prenatal records six times."

"He's an emergency physician."

"Exactly."

Sarah looked toward the ER.

Michael had worked beside her for eight years.

He had delivered terrible news to families.

Stayed after shifts.

Paid for a homeless patient's medicine.

Held Sarah's hand when her own father died.

"He wouldn't hurt children."

Lisa's expression softened.

"I hope you're right."

Michael was asked to come to an interview room.

He did not run.

He looked confused when questioned.

"Why did you access Grace Miller's chart?"

"Because she came through the ER."

"When?"

"About two months ago."

"There is no ER visit."

Michael frowned.

"Yes, there was."

They checked.

The record had been deleted.

Michael explained.

Grace arrived late at night.

Bruised.

Terrified.

She refused police.

She said someone was following her.

She asked Michael whether phenobarbital could kill newborns.

Lisa stared.

"Why would she ask that?"

"She said someone had threatened her babies."

"Who?"

"She wouldn't tell me."

"Why did you keep opening her chart?"

"Because I was worried."

Sarah looked relieved.

But Lisa continued.

"Where were you the night Grace died?"

Michael answered.

"At home."

"Anyone verify that?"

"No."

James entered carrying a forensic report.

They had found a partial shoe print near Grace's body.

White medical shoe.

Size eleven.

Michael wore size eleven.

Sarah looked at him.

He stared at the report.

"This is insane."

Then another result arrived.

Grace had skin beneath her fingernails.

Male DNA.

The first comparison returned.

Not Robert.

Not Harrison.

Not Nathan.

The DNA was related to Michael Carter.

Michael went completely still.

Lisa noticed.

"You know something."

He looked at Sarah.

Then at James.

"My brother."

Nobody spoke.

Michael had an older brother.

Thomas Carter.

Former nurse anesthetist.

Fired twelve years earlier.

Officially left the country.

Michael had not seen him in almost a decade.

But Thomas Carter had once worked for Hollow Creek.

The master archive proved it.

Thomas specialized in sedation.

Hospitals.

Quiet removals.

Fake medical emergencies.

His Hollow Creek designation was TC-7.

Last known assignment:

MILLER RECOVERY.

Police raided an apartment registered under a false name.

Thomas had left hours earlier.

Inside were photographs of Grace's farmhouse.

Medication.

Disposable gloves.

Baby formula.

And one item that made Michael sit down when he saw it.

A photograph of Sarah.

Taken outside the hospital.

On the back:

NURSE BENNETT – PROTECTIVE ATTACHMENT TO WITNESS.

Sarah stared.

"He was watching me?"

Lisa nodded.

"Because you were protecting Emma."

James entered with another photo.

Emma walking beside a social worker.

Another note.

MOVE BEFORE GIRL REMEMBERS CARTER HOUSE.

Michael frowned.

"Carter House?"

His childhood home had burned when he was fourteen.

His father died in the fire.

Thomas saved Michael.

Or so Michael had always believed.

Emma overheard the name.

"Carter House?"

Everyone looked at her.

May you like

She whispered, "That's the Black Bird House."

Michael's face drained.
