Chapter 10 - North House

Judge Reeves was arrested before sunrise.
But he refused to identify the person on the phone.
His arrest became national news.
Hollow Creek could no longer remain hidden.
Federal agencies launched investigations across five states.
Families came forward.
Mothers who had been told their babies died.
Children who had grown up under false identities.
Former nurses.
Adoption workers.
Bank employees.
Drivers.
Lawyers.
The organization began collapsing.
But nobody knew what North House was.
Daniel did.
"I heard Robert mention it once."
"When?" James asked.
"Years ago."
"What is it?"
"I thought it was a person."
Lisa placed a map on the table.
"We searched companies, properties, nonprofits."
Daniel studied the map.
Emma sat nearby coloring.
She looked up.
"North House is where the winter children go."
Every adult in the room turned.
Dr. Lowell spoke gently.
"What are winter children?"
Emma shrugged.
"From Mommy's story."
"What happened to them?"
"They waited for families."
"Where?"
"In a house with no windows."
Daniel's face changed.
He remembered.
"There was an old juvenile treatment center north of Hollow Creek."
Closed facility.
Private property.
Purchased by a shell corporation tied to Harrison Cole.
Federal teams arrived that afternoon.
The building appeared abandoned.
It wasn't.
There were fourteen children inside.
Ages three to sixteen.
Some had been missing for years.
Others believed the people holding them were their legal guardians.
In the basement were rooms without windows.
Records showed children being prepared for identity transfers.
But the most important discovery came from the office.
A file marked MILLER, EMMA.
Inside were photographs of her from infancy.
School pictures.
Medical records.
Notes about her memory development.
Someone had monitored her entire life.
One document was signed by Harrison Cole.
Another by Reeves.
A third signature appeared repeatedly.
Initials only.
A.V.
The same initials appeared on records dating back to the first Hollow Creek transfer twenty-two years earlier.
Older than Harrison's leadership.
Lisa realized something.
"Harrison didn't create Hollow Creek."
James looked up.
"He inherited it."
A phone recovered from North House contained recent messages.
One sent the night Grace died.
R.M. failed to secure witness child.
Second recovery team authorized.
Another sent after Emma reached the hospital.
Do not harm her.
The archive must remain intact.
James stared.
"They don't see Emma as a child."
Lisa nodded.
"They see her as evidence."
Harrison Cole finally asked to negotiate.
His conditions were simple.
Protect Ethan.
Reduce his sentence.
And he would explain A.V.
The government agreed only to hear him.
Harrison sat across from Lisa.
"A.V. isn't one person."
"What is it?"
"A designation."
"For?"
"The Archivist."
Lisa frowned.
"Who is the Archivist?"
"The person who controls the true Hollow Creek records."
"Where are those records?"
Harrison laughed quietly.
"You still think what you found matters."
"We found thousands of files."
"Copies."
Lisa leaned forward.
"Where are the originals?"
May you like
Harrison looked through the one-way glass as if he knew Emma was somewhere beyond it.
"Ask Grace's daughter about the train."
