Chapter 8 - The Gala of Lies

The Whitmore Capital ballroom had never looked more magnificent.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated white roses, gold table settings, and enormous banners celebrating the company’s achievements.
Grant moved through the room with practiced confidence.
He shook hands, posed for photographs, and assured investors that the fraud investigation concerned one former employee acting alone.
On the stage behind him, a video displayed images of families, workers, and community projects supposedly supported by Whitmore Capital.
Several of those projects had never received the money promised to them.
Hannah entered shortly after eight.
The room reacted immediately.
Conversations stopped. Cameras turned. Some guests looked curious, while others moved away as though guilt were contagious.
Hannah wore white because Grant expected her to arrive looking frightened and defeated.
She wanted him to see that she was neither.
A security officer approached.
“Mr. Whitmore is expecting you in the executive lounge.”
Hannah followed him through a side corridor.
Inside the lounge, Grant waited with two company attorneys.
The brown leather briefcase rested on a table.
“You came,” Grant said.
“You threatened my daughter.”
“I offered you a solution.”
One attorney pushed a document toward Hannah.
It was a confession stating that she had designed the fraudulent transfer system without Grant’s knowledge.
In exchange for signing, Whitmore Capital promised not to oppose a reduced criminal sentence.
“You expect me to sign this?” Hannah asked.
“You have no alternative.”
“I have the truth.”
Grant smiled.
“The truth is whatever survives in public.”
He opened the briefcase and removed photographs of Hannah meeting Samuel Brooks, Julia Bennett, and Olivia.
“You violated confidentiality agreements, stole company records, and contacted investors while under investigation.”
“They were victims.”
“They are witnesses to your conspiracy.”
Grant moved closer.
“If you do not sign, I will release documents showing that you transferred money into a secret account. I will ensure that you are arrested before your child is born.”
Hannah’s hand moved toward her stomach.
Grant noticed.
“Imagine giving birth while guarded by officers. Imagine Mia placed with strangers while you wait for trial.”
“You are not taking my children.”
“I do not need to. You will lose them yourself.”
Neither of them knew Mia stood outside the partially open door.
The recorder captured every word.
Hannah refused to sign.
Grant ordered security to remove her from the building after the main speech.
But before that happened, Eleanor Whitmore entered the lounge.
She had received an anonymous package that afternoon containing copies of Martin’s ledger.
She looked older than Hannah remembered.
“Is it true?” Eleanor asked her son.
Grant’s expression hardened.
“Someone is manipulating you.”
“The ledger contains your instructions.”
“Martin created it.”
“There are recordings.”
“Recordings can be altered.”
Eleanor turned toward Hannah.
“Did my son steal from the pension funds?”
“Yes.”
Grant slammed the briefcase shut.
“Do not answer for me!”
Hannah did not look away.
“He stole from them, and the board helped him hide it.”
Eleanor’s face filled with shame.
“I built this company to protect families.”
“No,” Grant said. “You built it to become powerful. I simply learned the lesson better than you did.”
Eleanor stared at him.
For the first time, Grant had spoken honestly.
He told the attorneys to leave.
Then he turned to Hannah.
“You have destroyed my mother’s confidence, turned employees against me, and involved investigators in private company matters.”
“You did that yourself.”
“I will destroy you before I allow you to take Whitmore Capital.”
He grabbed the briefcase and walked toward the ballroom.
Hannah followed.
Outside the lounge, she found Mia waiting.
Hannah’s fear became anger.
“What are you doing here?”
“Helping you.”
“You were supposed to be with Julia.”
“I recorded him again.”
Mia showed her the device.
Hannah knelt carefully.
“You cannot keep putting yourself in danger.”
“I heard what he said about taking us away.”
“He cannot.”
“Then prove it.”
Before Hannah could respond, applause rose from the ballroom.

Grant had stepped onto the stage.
He was about to announce that Hannah had confessed.
