Chapter 7 - The Ledger Grant Could Not Erase
The safe-deposit box contained a blue leather ledger, a flash drive, and a handwritten letter from Martin.
The ledger recorded every fraudulent transfer Grant had ordered over six years.
Dates, amounts, shell companies, secret accounts, and the names of the executives who had participated were written in Martin’s precise handwriting.
The flash drive contained copies of internal emails and recordings of meetings.
In one recording, Grant discussed using the Community Growth Fund to purchase a private resort through Calder Holdings.
In another, he instructed Martin to create false authorization records under Hannah’s name.
The letter was addressed to federal investigators.
I participated in these crimes because I was weak and afraid. Hannah Reed did not authorize the transfers. Grant Whitmore ordered us to use her credentials after she began questioning the accounts.
Hannah read the statement twice.
“This clears you,” Olivia said.
“It also proves the entire conspiracy.”
They delivered the evidence to Special Agent Rebecca Shaw.
Rebecca had spent weeks tracing the shell companies and interviewing victims. The ledger gave her what she needed to connect Grant directly to the stolen money.
“We can begin preparing charges,” Rebecca said. “But Grant’s attorneys will argue that Martin created these records to protect himself.”
“There are recordings,” Hannah replied.
“They are strong, but we need something recent. Something showing that Grant is still obstructing the investigation or threatening witnesses.”
Hannah thought about the upcoming Whitmore Capital investor gala.
Grant had planned the event to restore confidence in the company. Hundreds of investors, reporters, board members, and executives would attend.
Grant had also sent Hannah an invitation.
It was not an act of kindness.
He wanted to humiliate her publicly.
The invitation included a handwritten message.
Attend the gala and sign the admission. Refuse, and the evidence against you will be released to every major news organization.
Olivia opposed the idea of attending.
“It could be dangerous.”
“There will be hundreds of witnesses,” Hannah said.
“There will also be Grant’s private security.”
“Rebecca needs a recent threat.”
“She did not ask you to create one.”
“I will not create anything. Grant will.”
Hannah decided to attend.
Mia was supposed to stay with Julia and Marcus Bennett that evening.
But the child had other plans.
Earlier that week, Mia found the original recording device in a drawer. Hannah believed it had been given to Olivia, but Mia had exchanged it with an identical inactive device from an old school project.
Mia understood more than Hannah realized.
She knew Grant was preparing something at the gala. She also knew her mother would try to face him alone.
On the afternoon of the event, Mia wore the cream lace dress Daniel had bought for her final birthday with him.
She placed the recorder in its hidden pocket.
When Julia arrived to collect her, Mia said she had forgotten her reading book upstairs.

By the time Julia realized what had happened, Mia was on her way to Whitmore Capital.
