Chapter 14 - the secret inside the moon)

Detective Bennett called the officers guarding Lily.

"Take the necklace."

Nathan interrupted.

"Carefully."

Minutes felt unbearable.

They remained offshore while Bennett coordinated teams around Westmere.

Lily cried when the officer removed the necklace.

Nathan spoke to her by video.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

"Mommy gave it to me."

"I know."

"Don't lose it."

"We won't."

A technician examined the pendant.

The silver moon opened.

Inside was a micro storage card.

Anna had carried the final evidence around her neck for years.

Files were transferred securely to Bennett.

The first video opened.

Anna appeared on screen.

Nathan forgot the lighthouse.

Forgot Marcus.

Forgot everything.

She sat in a small room.

Hair shorter.

Face thinner.

Alive.

"If Nathan is watching this, something went wrong."

Nathan's eyes burned.

"I am sorry."

He reached toward the screen instinctively.

Anna continued.

"Harrison Vale believes Project June was designed to identify children with a rare medical marker. That is only part of the truth."

Documents appeared behind her.

"The project became a system for manipulating medical research, patents and family identities. Children were enrolled without legal consent. Records were altered. Guardians were paid or threatened."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"Lily was selected before birth because one of Harrison's companies gained access to prenatal screening data."

Nathan exhaled.

So there was no secret about Lily's parentage.

No hidden biological father.

No betrayal.

Only theft of private medical information.

Anna continued.

"When I discovered Lily's name, I began copying records."

The video shifted.

Harrison appeared in surveillance footage speaking to Dr. Kessler.

Another man stood beside him.

Malcolm Vale.

Marcus's father.

Marcus looked away.

Anna's voice continued.

"Malcolm died before I could expose him. Harrison took control afterward."

The next file showed payment lists.

Judges.

Doctors.

Private investigators.

Police officials.

Bennett whispered, "This is enough."

Nathan looked at her.

"For what?"

"Federal conspiracy charges. Fraud. Kidnapping. Evidence tampering. Possibly homicide."

Marcus stared at the files.

"My father built this."

Caleb answered quietly.

"Yes."

Marcus looked toward the lighthouse.

"And Harrison continued it."

"Yes."

Nathan's phone rang again.

Harrison.

"Time."

Nathan answered.

"I have the ledger."

"Come alone."

"Let me hear Rachel."

A pause.

Rachel's voice.

"Nathan, don't."

Harrison struck her.

Marcus surged forward.

Nathan held up a hand.

"If she gets hurt again, the ledger goes public."

Harrison laughed.

"You don't know what you have."

"I know enough."

"Then you know Anna murdered a man."

Nathan froze.

Caleb looked at him.

"What?"

Harrison continued.

"The man found inside her burning car."

Nathan's chest tightened.

"Self defense."

"Were you there?"

"No."

"Then perhaps you shouldn't be so certain."

Nathan refused the bait.

"Rachel first."

"Bring the ledger."

The call ended.

Bennett gave instructions.

Nathan would approach with a decoy notebook.

Officers would move once Rachel was visible.

Marcus hated the plan.

Nathan hated it more.

But there was no better option.

He crossed from the boat to the rocky shore.

The lighthouse door opened.

Harrison Vale stood inside.

He looked exactly as Nathan remembered from photographs.

Gray hair.

Round glasses.

Perfect dark suit.

As though he were attending a board meeting rather than holding a woman hostage.

Rachel sat tied to a chair behind him.

Her face was bruised.

Nathan's anger nearly destroyed the plan.

Harrison extended his hand.

"The ledger."

Nathan held up the notebook.

"Rachel walks first."

"You're not negotiating."

"I am."

Harrison smiled.

"You have Anna's stubbornness."

"Where is she?"

"Closer than you think."

Nathan's pulse jumped.

"Alive?"

Harrison studied him.

"You still love her."

"Answer me."

"Give me the ledger."

Rachel shook her head violently.

"Nathan, don't."

Harrison moved a handgun toward her.

Nathan tossed the notebook across the floor.

Harrison picked it up.

Opened it.

His expression changed.

Blank pages.

Nathan dropped.

The window behind Harrison shattered.

Police shouted.

Marcus charged through the side entrance.

Rachel screamed.

Harrison fired.

The bullet struck stone.

Nathan tackled him.

They crashed against the lighthouse wall.

The handgun slid away.

Harrison was older but surprisingly strong.

He drove an elbow into Nathan's face.

Nathan hit him back.

Years of grief exploded with the punch.

Anna's funeral.

Lily crying.

Rachel poisoned.

All of it.

Harrison fell.

Police rushed in.

Bennett kicked the gun away.

"Don't move."

Harrison laughed from the floor.

Nathan stood over him.

"It's over."

Harrison looked up.

"No."

Federal agents arrived before dawn.

Rachel was taken to the hospital.

Marcus refused to leave her side.

The second ledger and Anna's files were uploaded to multiple secure servers.

Arrest warrants spread across three states.

Project June began collapsing.

For the first time Nathan believed the nightmare might actually end.

Then Bennett approached him outside the lighthouse.

"We found something downstairs."

Nathan followed her.

Behind an old storage cabinet was a recently used room.

A bed.

Food.

Clothing.

On a table sat a photograph of Nathan and Lily.

Beside it was Anna's wedding ring.

Nathan picked it up.

Still warm from someone's hand.

He turned toward Bennett.

"She was here."

Bennett nodded.

"Recently."

"How recently?"

A voice came from the doorway.

"Ten minutes."

Caleb stood under guard.

Nathan stared.

"You saw her?"

Caleb nodded.

"She left through the north tunnel when police entered."

Nathan ran outside.

The shoreline was empty.

Only footprints remained in the wet sand.

They disappeared at the water.

Nathan shouted her name.

"Anna."

Nothing.

Again.

"Anna."

The lake returned only the sound of waves.

Then his phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

Take Lily home.

I will explain everything when it is safe.

May you like

A second message appeared before Nathan could respond.

Do not trust Marcus.
