Chapter 1 - breadcrumbs beside the vent)

Three days earlier, Ryan Carter arrived home at 4:17 in the afternoon.

He remembered the exact time because nothing about the next few minutes would ever leave his memory.

His beige shirt was wrinkled from a twelve-hour day at Carter Architectural Group, and his phone was still vibrating with messages from a client in Boston when he stepped through the mudroom door.

The kitchen smelled like roasted chicken, rosemary, and the cinnamon candle Claire always lit when the weather turned cold.

It should have felt ordinary.

Instead, the house felt strangely quiet.

"Ethan?"

No answer.

Ryan placed his keys beside the fruit bowl.

Then he heard something scrape against metal.

It came from the far side of the kitchen.

Ryan walked around the island.

His seven-year-old son was kneeling on the floor beside a rectangular ventilation grille positioned low against the wall.

Ethan had not noticed him.

The boy was holding pieces of bread in one hand.

With the other, he was carefully pushing them through the narrow metal slats.

One piece at a time.

Ryan frowned.

"Ethan, what are you doing?"

Ethan spun around so quickly that the remaining bread fell from his hand.

His face drained of color.

"Dad."

Ryan looked at the vent.

Then at the breadcrumbs scattered across the polished wooden floor.

"Why are you feeding bread into the wall?"

Ethan's eyes filled with fear.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then he glanced toward the hallway.

Ryan followed his gaze.

No one was there.

"Ethan."

The boy swallowed.

"She told me not to tell you."

Ryan stopped breathing for a moment.

"Who?"

Ethan slowly raised one trembling finger toward the wall.

"The girl."

Ryan stared at him.

"What girl?"

Ethan whispered, "The one inside."

Ryan thought he had misunderstood.

He crouched beside his son.

"What do you mean inside?"

Ethan looked toward the vent.

"She's hungry."

Ryan reached for the metal grille.

Footsteps suddenly thundered behind him.

"Don't!"

Claire rushed into the kitchen.

She placed herself between Ryan and the vent, spreading both arms as though she were protecting something behind her.

Her brown hair had come loose from its clip.

Her face was pale.

Ryan stood.

"Claire?"

She looked from Ryan to Ethan.

"What happened?"

Ryan gestured toward the floor.

"I found Ethan feeding someone through the vent."

Claire's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Ryan saw it.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

His stomach tightened.

"What is behind that wall?"

Claire shook her head.

"Nothing."

Ethan looked at her.

"Mom."

Claire turned sharply.

"Go upstairs."

"But she hasn't eaten enough."

Ryan looked at Claire.

Claire looked at Ethan.

The silence became unbearable.

Then a sound came from inside the wall.

Very faint.

A child crying.

Ryan's entire body went cold.

He slowly turned toward the vent.

"Claire."

She whispered, "Ryan, please."

The crying came again.

Ryan stepped forward.

Claire blocked him.

"Move."

"You don't understand."

"Move."

"If you open that wall, everything changes."

Ryan stared at his wife.

"There's a child inside our house."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

Ryan felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.

"You know?"

Ethan suddenly gasped.

A tiny hand had appeared behind the metal slats.

Small fingers curled through the vent.

The skin was pale.

Ryan dropped to his knees.

"Oh my God."

The hand trembled.

Then came a weak voice.

"Daddy?"

Ryan froze.

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan whispered, "Dad..."

Ryan leaned closer.

"Sweetheart, can you hear me?"

The girl began crying.

"Daddy... please save me."

Ryan slowly turned his head.

Claire had backed away from the wall.

Her lips were trembling.

Ryan stood.

His voice became barely more than a whisper.

"Why did she call me Daddy?"

Claire opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ryan took one step toward her.

"Who is she?"

Claire looked at Ethan.

Then at Ryan.

Finally she whispered, "Her name is Lily."

Ryan stared at her.

"How do you know her name?"

May you like

Claire's eyes filled with terror.

"Because I brought her here."
