Chapter 14 - The Last Signal

The copper sphere went dark.

Every filament in the chamber became rigid.

Nathan collapsed.

Emma stopped breathing.

The roots holding Elias released him.

He fell into Vera’s arms.

Across the underground laboratory, the children connected to the local network lost consciousness.

For one terrible second, nothing moved.

Claire released the shutdown key and ran to Emma.

“No. No, no, no.”

She began chest compressions.

Melissa knelt beside her and opened Emma’s airway.

Reyes checked Nathan.

“No pulse.”

Vera placed Elias on the floor.

His skin had already begun turning gray.

Director Ward crawled toward the console.

“We have to reactivate it.”

Claire shouted without looking up.

“Stay away.”

“They will all die.”

“They were dying because of it.”

Ward reached for the key.

Reyes aimed his weapon.

“Touch it and I shoot.”

Vera joined Claire.

She examined Emma’s neck.

“The fragments are dormant.”

“She is not breathing.”

“The organism was controlling parts of her autonomic system. Her body needs time to recover.”

Claire continued compressions.

“Emma, come back.”

Melissa used a manual ventilation mask.

After thirty seconds, Emma’s heart did not restart.

Claire’s arms began shaking.

Vera prepared a syringe of epinephrine from an emergency kit.

She injected it.

Nothing happened.

Nathan lay several feet away.

The dark filament beneath his skin was motionless.

Reyes started compressions on him.

Elias opened his eyes.

Vera stared.

“Elias?”

His lips moved.

No sound emerged.

He pointed toward Emma.

Then toward the copper sphere.

Vera shook her head.

“We cannot turn it back on.”

Elias pointed again.

This time, Claire understood.

“He does not mean the relay.”

She followed the direction of his finger.

A smaller glass unit stood behind the main console.

Inside it was the red capsule removed from Emma.

The stolen object had returned to the chamber.

Vera opened the unit.

The capsule reacted immediately to Emma’s presence.

Its shell unfolded.

A single pale filament extended toward her.

Claire blocked it.

“No.”

Elias forced out one word.

“Guardian.”

Nathan had called the imitation a threat.

Vera had called it a guardian.

Claire remembered how it had asked Emma to open the door using Daniel’s voice.

But it had also led Claire to identify the deeper network.

Perhaps it had never been trying to kill Emma.

Perhaps it was trying to merge with her before the older presence could take control.

Claire looked at Vera.

“What happens if it reconnects?”

“I do not know.”

“That answer is getting old.”

“It may restart her heart.”

“Or infect her again.”

“Yes.”

Emma’s face was pale.

Claire could no longer feel warmth in her fingers.

She took the capsule.

It was warm and pulsing.

She placed it against the incision beneath Emma’s chin.

The pale filament entered.

Claire watched the heart monitor they had carried from the hospital.

No signal.

Then one beat appeared.

A second followed.

Emma inhaled violently.

Claire pulled her into her arms.

Emma coughed and opened her eyes.

The capsule detached and collapsed into a dry shell.

At the same moment, Nathan gasped.

Reyes rolled him onto his side.

Dark liquid poured from the wound in his arm.

His pulse returned.

Around the laboratory, the other children began waking.

The local network remained inactive.

Ward stared at the dead capsule.

“What did it do?”

Vera examined Emma.

“It transferred its stored biological pattern.”

“To restart her?”

“And perhaps to protect her from future integration.”

Claire looked beneath Emma’s chin.

The black lines were gone.

Only a thin silver mark remained.

Elias coughed.

Vera held him.

For the first time, his eyes were clear.

“You came back,” she whispered.

“Briefly.”

“Tell me how to stop the Choir.”

Elias looked toward the dark copper sphere.

“You cannot stop what is already awake.”

“How much time do we have?”

He struggled to breathe.

“The first global pulse was only a test.”

Ward moved closer.

“When is the next one?”

Elias looked at Emma.

“She will hear it before anyone else.”

Vera gripped his hand.

“What should we do?”

“Do not let them take her.”

His eyes closed.

Vera pressed her forehead to his.

“Elias?”

He did not answer.

Director Ward’s agents began surrounding Claire.

Ward extended her hand.

“Mrs. Bennett, your daughter is now a national-security asset.”

Claire stood slowly.

“She is a child.”

“She is the only known person capable of interpreting the signal.”

“And you will lock her in another room under another school.”

“I will protect her.”

Vera rose beside Claire.

“That is what I once called it too.”

Ward looked at her coldly.

“You are under arrest.”

“So is half your agency, once the records become public.”

Reyes held up his phone.

The device had reactivated when the relay shut down.

A live upload indicator flashed on the screen.

“I transmitted the laboratory files, photographs, and audio recordings to six news organizations.”

Ward’s face changed.

“You have no idea what you have done.”

“I made secrecy inconvenient.”

Sirens approached above the school.

Not federal vehicles.

Local police.

Fire crews.

Ambulances.

Parents gathered outside the perimeter after receiving Melissa’s emergency message.

Ward could no longer remove everyone quietly.

She lowered her weapon.

“This is not over.”

Claire lifted Emma into her arms.

“No.”

May you like

She looked at the dead black roots covering the chamber floor.

“It has barely started.”
