Chapter 13 - The Man in the Roots

The chamber filled with a low vibration.

Copper coils along the walls activated one by one.

Nathan fell to his knees.

The dark lines beneath his skin pulsed with the same rhythm.

Emma screamed.

Claire held her.

Vera rushed toward the console.

“You cannot disconnect from the network. Your body will fail.”

Elias Holt’s black eyes followed her.

“My body failed twenty-eight years ago.”

“You are alive.”

“No. I am occupied.”

The tank fluid began turning dark.

Reyes aimed at the control system.

“What happens if we destroy the tank?”

Vera blocked him.

“The organism spreads through every connected structure.”

“It has already spread.”

“You have seen fragments. Not the source.”

Melissa looked at Emma.

“What does it want with her?”

Elias answered.

“To leave.”

Claire stared at the tank.

“Leave what?”

“This room. This network. This planet.”

The black fluid rose around his face.

Emma whispered, “He is not talking about himself.”

Elias smiled.

“No.”

The voice changed.

It became layered with thousands of tones.

“We have waited beneath your oceans since before your first cities.”

Claire held Emma tighter.

Vera stared at her husband.

“You said the Choir came from the cable.”

The thing inside Elias turned toward her.

“The cable found us.”

Vera stepped backward.

Her certainty began to collapse.

“You told me integration would preserve humanity.”

“It will.”

“Why?”

“Because a preserved mind does not resist.”

Nathan struggled to stand.

“You are not building survivors. You are building storage.”

The chamber lights flickered.

Images appeared on every monitor.

Cities.

Children.

Hospitals.

Thousands of people with black filaments beneath their skin.

Then a world without movement.

No cars.

No aircraft.

No lights.

Human figures stood motionless in streets, connected by dark growth spreading across buildings and roads.

The network’s future.

Vera stared at the images.

“This is not what Elias showed me.”

Elias spoke with his original voice for one brief second.

“Vera, listen to me.”

She turned toward him.

His face twisted with pain.

“The organism lies through memories. It shows you what you need to see.”

“Elias?”

“Destroy the relay.”

The layered voice returned.

The tank glass cracked.

Vera looked toward a copper sphere suspended above the chamber.

“That relay connects the local network.”

Reyes aimed at it.

“If we destroy it, what happens to the children?”

Vera hesitated.

“I do not know.”

Emma looked at Nathan.

“The fragments will die.”

Nathan nodded.

“So may I.”

Claire met his eyes.

He gave her a tired smile.

“That is not a reason to leave it active.”

Vera moved toward the emergency controls.

The steel door opened behind them.

Federal agents entered.

Their commander, a broad-shouldered woman named Director Helen Ward, raised her weapon.

“Step away from the relay.”

Reyes turned.

“You knew about this.”

Ward ignored him.

She looked at Vera.

“You were instructed to maintain containment.”

Vera laughed bitterly.

“You knew Elias was no longer in control.”

“We suspected.”

“And you let me continue.”

“Your work produced stable hosts.”

“Children.”

“Necessary hosts.”

Claire stared at Ward.

“You funded the program.”

Ward’s gaze shifted to Emma.

“Subject E-7 is coming with us.”

Claire stepped in front of her.

“No.”

Ward raised her weapon.

“You do not understand the scale of the threat.”

“I understand that every person who says that wants my daughter.”

The tank shattered.

Black fluid flooded the chamber.

Filaments spread across the floor.

Agents fired.

Bullets tore through the growth but did not stop it.

Elias fell from the tank, connected to a thick mass of black roots.

Vera ran to him.

He grabbed her wrist.

“Relay,” he gasped.

Reyes fired at the copper sphere.

The bullet ricocheted.

“Armored.”

Vera threw Claire a key.

“Manual shutdown. Behind the tank.”

Claire ran through the spreading fluid.

Ward ordered her agents to stop her.

Melissa pulled a fire alarm lever.

Chemical suppressant filled the chamber, slowing the roots.

Nathan tackled one agent.

The impact drove a filament deeper into his neck.

He cried out but held the man down.

Claire reached the rear console.

A lock waited beneath a red cover.

She inserted the key.

A message appeared.

LOCAL RELAY SHUTDOWN WILL TERMINATE ALL CONNECTED BIOLOGICAL HOSTS.

Claire froze.

All connected hosts.

The children.

Nathan.

Possibly Emma.

Vera shouted through the suppressant.

“Do it.”

Claire looked at Emma.

Black lines covered half her neck.

“Will she die?”

Vera did not answer.

Elias screamed.

The roots lifted him from the floor.

Ward pointed her weapon at Claire.

“Step away from the console.”

Emma looked through the fog.

“Mom.”

Claire’s hand remained on the key.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not knowing how to save everyone.”

Emma smiled weakly.

“You told me love doesn’t need a lie.”

Claire began crying.

Emma placed one hand over the dark lines on her neck.

May you like

“Turn it off.”

Claire twisted the key.
