Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Room
The investigation lasted several months.
Michael was charged with fraud-related offenses, attempted theft, identity misuse, and unlawful access to financial accounts. Colin accepted responsibility for his part and provided records showing how long the plan had been developing.
The transfer of the house was stopped before it became valid.
The lender withdrew.
Emily’s education trust remained untouched.
Rachel filed for divorce and received temporary sole custody while the court reviewed Michael’s actions.
She also changed every lock in the house.
The first room Rachel restored was Emily’s.
They refused to make it exactly as it had been.
“That room belonged to the time before,” Emily explained.
So they created something new.
They painted the walls a soft shade of blue. They added shelves for Emily’s books, a wider desk for school projects, and small lights around the window.
The antique lamp returned to the bedside table.
The rescued snow globes stood in a line above the bookshelf.
Rachel purchased a new green bedspread, but Emily kept the olive-colored pillow that had been on the kitchen floor.
“Why keep that?” Rachel asked.
Emily held it against her chest.
“Because it reminds me I made it through the worst night.”
Rachel reduced her business travel and arranged for Laura to stay with Emily whenever overnight trips were unavoidable.
She also began seeing a counselor with her daughter.
Healing did not happen quickly.
Emily sometimes woke when she heard footsteps in the hallway. Rachel sometimes checked the front door three times before going to bed.
But fear slowly stopped controlling the house.
One evening, Rachel noticed warm light glowing beneath Emily’s bedroom door.
For a second, the old panic returned.
Then she heard Emily laughing during a video call with her school friends.

It meant her daughter was safely inside.
