Chapter 6 - The Forged Life

The bedroom looked like a warehouse.

Boxes were labeled with the names of auction companies and private storage facilities. Rachel recognized belongings from every room in the house.

Her mother’s paintings.

Emily’s computer.

Rachel’s jewelry.

Family records.

Even the snow globe collection Emily had kept since she was six.

On the folding table lay the forged transfer documents.

Michael and Colin stared at Rachel.

“You weren’t supposed to be home tonight,” Michael said.

Rachel forced herself to remain calm.

“Why is Emily sleeping on the kitchen floor?”

Michael claimed it was temporary.

He claimed the house needed to be emptied because of a sudden financial opportunity.

He claimed he had been preparing to explain everything.

Every sentence made the truth clearer.

He had created Bennett Residential Holdings two months earlier using Colin’s address.

He forged Rachel’s signature to transfer control of the house to the company.

At dawn, they planned to meet a private lender who would provide a large loan secured against the property.

Michael intended to use the money to repay his most aggressive creditors and move the remaining funds into an account Rachel could not access.

“What about Emily’s trust?” Rachel asked.

Michael’s eyes shifted toward the documents.

“It was sitting there doing nothing.”

“It belongs to her.”

“It belongs to this family.”

“No. It belongs to Emily.”

Michael lowered his voice.

“Everything I did was to keep us together.”

“You told our daughter I abandoned her.”

“You were always leaving.”

“I went to work for one week.”

“One week this time.”

Rachel stared at him.

He was no longer speaking about money. He was punishing her for being independent, for owning the house, for earning more than he did, and for refusing to finance his failures.

Colin began placing papers in a briefcase.

Rachel ordered him to stop.

Michael stepped between them.

“Go downstairs,” he said.

Rachel held his gaze.

“No.”

For the first time in their marriage, she saw that his confidence depended entirely on her fear.

And she was no longer afraid of losing him.

She was afraid of what would happen if she allowed him to stay.
