Chapter 6 - The Fire Daniel Predicted)

Samuel moved first.
He grabbed Arthur and dragged him behind a steel press as flames erupted near the entrance.
Grace screamed.
Arthur ran toward her.
The laser sight returned.
He ignored it.
A gunshot cracked.
Metal exploded beside his head.
Arthur reached Grace.
Samuel fired toward the catwalk.
The shooter ducked.
Arthur cut Grace's restraints with a broken piece of sheet metal.
"Can you walk?"
"I think so."
Smoke thickened.
Grace coughed.
"The eastern loading dock."
"How do you know?"
"Caroline showed me."
They moved through machinery.
Behind them, fire spread over the old wooden floors.
Grace stumbled.
Arthur caught her.
"Victoria?"
"Gone."
"Who else?"
"I don't know. Two men. One called someone Mr. Vale."
Samuel stopped.
"Vale?"
"You know him?"
Samuel's face hardened.
"Richard Vale sits on the Blackwood board."
Arthur stared.
His godfather.
The man who had taught him to sail.
The man who had delivered Daniel's eulogy.
The man Arthur had trusted more than almost anyone alive.
They reached the loading dock.
A chained door blocked the exit.
Arthur rammed it.
Nothing.
Grace pointed.
"Office."
Inside the factory manager's office, they found a rusted emergency key.
They escaped seconds before part of the roof collapsed.
Outside, Grace fell to her knees.
Arthur called Helen, not emergency services.
Twenty minutes later, trusted paramedics connected to Helen arrived.
Grace refused a hospital.
"They'll find me."
Arthur knelt beside her.
"Tell me everything."
Grace looked exhausted.
"Not here."
At Helen's farm, Maya and Noah ran to Grace.
Maya crashed into her arms.
Noah followed.
Grace cried harder than either child.
Arthur watched from the doorway.
This woman had surrendered her identity, career, safety, and nearly her life to protect Daniel's children.
He had allowed Victoria to call her "the maid."
Arthur would carry that shame for the rest of his life.
Hours later, Grace told the full story.
Caroline Wexler had come from a family that once controlled factories, shipping warehouses, and land later purchased by Blackwood Holdings.
Her father had resisted selling.
Then tax investigations appeared.
Loans were called.
Insurance contracts were canceled.
Within eighteen months, Wexler Industries collapsed.
Blackwood acquired the assets cheaply.
Years later Caroline met Daniel.
Neither initially realized their families had been enemies.
When Daniel discovered how Blackwood obtained the Wexler properties, he began investigating.
That investigation led to Project Orphan.
"Caroline thought your father ordered everything," Grace said.
Arthur stared at the floor.
"Did he?"
"Some of it."
"How much?"
Grace hesitated.
"Charles was not innocent."
Arthur felt nothing.
Perhaps he had exhausted his capacity for shock.
Grace continued.
"But Daniel eventually believed someone controlled Charles too."
"Richard Vale?"
"I don't know."
Samuel asked, "What happened the night of the crash?"
Grace took a long breath.
"Daniel called me. He said they were being followed. Caroline had already given birth privately because they were afraid hospital records would be altered."
Maya listened from the couch.
Grace had wanted the children asleep.
They refused.
"They left the babies with me," Grace continued. "Daniel and Caroline drove north."
"Why?"
"To meet Margaret Shaw."
Arthur looked up.
"The lawyer."
"She had evidence."
"What evidence?"
"Proof that Project Orphan didn't start with your father."
Arthur frowned.
"Then who?"
Grace shook her head.
"Daniel never got to tell me."
The crash occurred forty minutes later.
Daniel died at the scene.
Caroline survived.
A private ambulance took her to St. Agnes Clinic.
Grace went there.
By the time she arrived, Caroline was gone.
"The doctor said a family representative signed her out."
"Victoria."
Grace nodded.
"She used your name."
Arthur's face tightened.
"Mine?"
"She said she was acting for Arthur Blackwood."
Samuel cursed.
Arthur understood the cruelty of it.
If Caroline survived, she might have believed Arthur himself had ordered her removal.
"What happened after?"
"Your father found me."
"Charles knew about the children."
"Yes."
"Why didn't he kill them too?"
Grace looked at Maya and Noah.
"I think he tried to save them."
Arthur stared.
Grace continued.
"He gave me money. New records. He arranged a cottage. He ordered me never to contact anyone in the family."
"Then why bring you to Blackwood Manor?"
"Because five years later he discovered Victoria was searching for me."
Arthur frowned.
"So he hid you inside the place she'd least expect?"
Grace nodded.
"Under her nose."
It was clever.
And insane.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Grace looked at him sadly.
"Because he didn't trust you."
Arthur absorbed that.
"Why?"
"He believed Victoria had already compromised you."
The spousal proxy.
The marriage.
The board.
Arthur looked toward the clock.
Seven hours remained until the vote.
Samuel opened his laptop.
"We stop the sale."
Grace shook her head.
"You can't."
"Why?"
"Because the Red Ledger you gave Victoria was real."
Arthur looked at Samuel.
Samuel grimaced.
"I had three minutes."
Grace continued.
"With the ledger and Arthur's proxy, Victoria can claim the children's trust is fraudulent and vote the shares temporarily."
Arthur stood.
"Then we go public."
Samuel shook his head.
"Without confirming the trust, the board calls it extortion."
"DNA."
"Not fast enough."
Grace looked at Maya.
"There is another copy."
Everyone turned.
"Of the ledger?"
"No."
Grace looked at Arthur.
"Of Caroline's confession."
Arthur froze.
"What confession?"
"The one she recorded after Daniel died."
Silence.
"You said she disappeared."
"She did."
"Then how do you have a recording?"
"I don't."
Grace looked toward Maya's bracelet.
"Daniel hid it inside the one thing he believed nobody in the family would ever destroy."
May you like
Arthur stared at the silver leaf charm.
Grace whispered, "His mother's grave."
