Chapter 11 - The Man With Daniel's Face)

Arthur brought Caroline to Helen's farm.
Grace saw her through the window.
Neither moved.
Six years separated them.
Six years of grief.
Six years of assumptions.
Caroline entered.
Maya stood behind Grace.
Noah beside her.
Caroline looked at them.
Her body began shaking.
Maya whispered, "Are you Caroline?"
Caroline nodded.
Maya looked at Grace.
Then back.
"Are you our mom?"
Caroline struggled to answer.
Grace answered for her.
"She's the woman who gave you life."
Maya looked at Grace again.
"And you're my mom too."
Grace started crying.
"Yes."
Maya walked toward Caroline.
She stopped two feet away.
Caroline knelt.
"I am so sorry."
Maya studied her face.
Noah hid behind Arthur.
Caroline didn't force anything.
She simply opened her hands.
After several seconds, Maya stepped forward.
Caroline hugged her.
Noah cried.
Then ran too.
Arthur turned away.
Some moments did not belong to him.
Later, the adults gathered around Helen's dining table.
Caroline explained the Prague photograph.
After escaping St. Agnes, she had spent years moving between safe houses, using money hidden by her father.
She followed fragments Daniel had left behind.
Fake accounts.
Travel manifests.
Encrypted email.
Twice she found evidence Daniel was alive.
Twice it vanished.
"Then I found this man."
She placed several photographs on the table.
Prague.
Vienna.
Zurich.
Montreal.
A man resembling Daniel appeared in all of them.
Samuel examined the pictures.
"Facial match?"
"Eighty-nine percent."
Arthur laughed softly.
"Because it's him."
Caroline shook her head.
"Daniel broke his left collarbone when he was fourteen."
Arthur nodded.
"I remember."
"It healed badly. His left shoulder sat slightly lower."
They compared the photographs.
The man's shoulders were even.
Arthur stared.
"Surgery?"
"Maybe."
"Or someone who looks like him," Samuel said.
Arthur rejected the idea instinctively.
Then remembered everything else that had seemed impossible.
Caroline opened another file.
"The man used Daniel's identity to authorize transactions."
"What transactions?"
"Blackwood accounts."
Arthur looked at Vale.
At least in his mind.
"So Vale needs Daniel legally alive."
"Sometimes."
Caroline nodded.
"And legally dead at other times."
Samuel understood.
"Dead for inheritance. Alive for legacy authorizations."
"Exactly."
Arthur felt disgust.
His brother had become a signature they could switch on and off.
"Who can do that?"
Caroline looked at him.
"Someone controlling identity systems, hospital records, and corporate archives."
Project Orphan.
Helen opened the Red Ledger.
"There are references to something called Continuity."
Caroline stared.
"Where?"
Helen showed her.
PROJECT ORPHAN
CONTINUITY SUBJECT D-1
STATUS ACTIVE
Arthur's skin prickled.
"D."
Samuel looked at him.
"Daniel."
Caroline whispered, "Subject one."
Arthur reread the line.
Status active.
"He's alive."
Helen cautioned, "Or his identity is active."
Arthur hated the distinction.
The following morning, federal agents arrived at Helen's farm.
Not local police.
A task force assembled through Helen's contacts.
Victoria was detained on charges connected to kidnapping, assault, evidence destruction, and financial fraud.
Peter Lawson was arrested.
Two board members resigned before noon.
Richard Vale disappeared.
Blackwood Holdings suspended the infrastructure sale.
For the first time in forty-eight hours, Arthur could breathe.
It lasted twelve minutes.
Then Samuel received a call.
He went pale.
"What?"
"Victoria wants to talk."
Arthur laughed.
"Of course she does."
"Only to you."
"No."
Samuel frowned.
"No?"
Arthur looked toward Maya and Noah playing with Grace and Caroline on the lawn.
"I'm done letting Victoria choose the room."
"Arthur."
"If she wants a deal, she talks in front of federal investigators."
Three hours later, Victoria entered an interview room wearing county detention clothes instead of designer silk.
Arthur sat across from her.
She smiled.
"You look tired."
"You look smaller."
Her smile disappeared.
Arthur placed Daniel's photograph on the table.
Victoria looked at it.
No reaction.
Too little reaction.
"You've seen him."
She looked up.
"I've seen Daniel."
"When?"
"Recently?"
Victoria smiled again.
"How much is my freedom worth?"
"Nothing."
"Then enjoy never knowing."
Arthur leaned forward.
"Vale abandoned you."
Her expression twitched.
"He'll have you killed before trial."
"You think I don't know that?"
Arthur sat back.
"Then talk."
Victoria looked toward the observation glass.
"I want federal protection."
"You don't get to negotiate through me."
"I do if you want Daniel."
Arthur's jaw tightened.
Victoria whispered, "He survived the crash."
Arthur's heart hammered.
"You saw him."
"Yes."
"When?"
"That night."
Arthur stopped breathing.
Victoria continued.
"Vale's men brought Daniel to the clinic."
"Why?"
"Because Daniel knew something they needed."
"What?"
Victoria looked terrified now.
"The identity of the person above Vale."
Arthur frowned.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"I swear."
Arthur almost laughed.
She had no currency left in that word.
Victoria continued.
"Daniel called the person The Architect."
Arthur stared.
"Vale answers to someone."
"Everyone answers to someone."
"Where did they take Daniel?"
Victoria swallowed.
"A private medical facility."
"Name."
"Marrow House."
Samuel, behind the glass, immediately wrote something.
Arthur asked, "Where?"
Victoria whispered, "It officially closed fifteen years ago."
"Where?"
"North Ridge."
Arthur stood.
Victoria grabbed his wrist.
He nearly recoiled.
"Don't go."
Arthur stared at her.
For the first time, Victoria looked sincerely frightened.
"If Marrow House is still operating, they don't keep patients."
"What do they keep?"
May you like
Victoria's voice dropped.
"Versions."
