Chapter 1 - The Woman in Seat 7C)

Six hours earlier, Elena Carter had believed her marriage was merely falling apart.
She did not yet understand that someone had been quietly dismantling her life piece by piece.
The morning began normally.
Sunlight poured through the windows of the Carter estate in Connecticut.
Elena stood in front of her bedroom mirror, fastening a pearl necklace around her throat.
On the bed behind her lay an open suitcase.
She was supposed to be attending a charity conference in California.
At least, that was what Julian believed.
The truth was different.
For three weeks, Elena had noticed things she could not explain.
Missing financial statements.
Calls Julian refused to discuss.
A new account at a bank she had never heard of.
And most strangely, a change in the way her husband looked at her.
He no longer looked guilty.
He looked impatient.
That frightened her.
Guilt meant there was something to confess.
Impatience meant he believed she would soon be gone.
Elena picked up her phone.
There was one message from her lawyer, Margaret Hayes.
Do not confront him yet.
Elena had stared at those words for almost ten minutes.
Then another message arrived.
I found the connection.
Call me immediately.
Elena stepped into the hallway and closed the bedroom door.
Margaret answered on the first ring.
"Are you alone?"
"Yes."
"Good."
There was silence.
"What did you find?"
"I need you to listen carefully."
Elena's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Okay."
"Julian has been moving money for months."
"I know."
"No. You don't."
Margaret's voice became quieter.
"The money isn't being moved to another woman."
Elena froze.
"Then where?"
"That's what I don't understand."
A pause.
"Someone has been preparing to transfer ownership of several assets."
"Whose assets?"
"Yours."
Elena's heart stopped.
"What?"
"I found documents connected to your late father's trust."
"My father died twelve years ago."
"I know."
Margaret hesitated.
"That's why this is impossible."
Elena walked toward the staircase.
"What did you find?"
"Your father left something behind that Julian has been trying to access."
"What?"
"I don't know yet."
Elena looked toward the living room.
Julian's voice came from downstairs.
He was on the phone.
She quietly approached the railing.
"Everything is ready," he was saying.
Elena stopped.
Julian continued.
"Once we leave tonight, there won't be anything she can do."
Elena's blood ran cold.
He was not talking to a business partner.
He was talking about her.
She stepped backward before he could look up.
Minutes later, Julian entered the bedroom.
He smiled.
"You ready for California?"
Elena smiled back.
"Almost."
He kissed her cheek.
She resisted the urge to step away.
"What time is your flight?"
"Seven."
"Mine too."
Elena's expression remained calm.
"Really?"
"Business trip."
"Of course."
Julian picked up his suitcase.
"I'll see you there."
He left.
Elena waited until she heard the front door close.
Then she called Margaret again.
"I heard him."
"What did he say?"
"He said once they leave tonight, I won't be able to do anything."
Margaret was silent.
Then she said something Elena would never forget.
"Elena, don't go to California."
May you like
"Why?"
"Because I think he believes you're going to die."
