Chapter 7 - the night the family chose sides)

Julian did not wait to see who stepped out of the SUVs.

He picked up the metal box.

"We leave through the back."

Elaine grabbed Maya's arm.

"There is another road."

Maya remembered.

A narrow service path used by vineyard workers decades earlier.

They moved through the dark kitchen.

Outside, car doors slammed.

Voices.

Maya recognized her father's.

"Elaine."

He was not shouting.

That frightened her more.

Julian led them through the rear mudroom.

Elaine stopped.

"The tapes."

"They're in the box."

"No. One is upstairs."

"Leave it."

Elaine shook her head.

"It's Eleanor and Robert."

Maya stared.

"What?"

"A recorded conversation."

Footsteps crossed the front porch.

Julian looked toward the stairs.

"How long?"

"Thirty seconds."

Maya said, "Go."

Elaine ran upstairs.

Robert knocked.

"Maya."

She froze.

He knew she was there.

"Maya, open the door."

Julian whispered, "Back exit."

Maya did not move.

Her father knocked again.

"You have property that belongs to Sterling Ridge."

Maya almost laughed.

Even now.

Even at one in the morning.

He was already constructing the legal language.

Julian pulled her toward the rear door.

Elaine came down holding a cassette tape.

Then the front door opened.

Not forced.

Unlocked.

Maya looked at Elaine.

Elaine's face fell.

"I locked it."

Robert entered.

David came behind him.

Maya stared.

David stopped when he saw her.

Shame crossed his face.

Then two men Maya recognized from Sterling Ridge's security staff entered.

Robert looked at the open floorboards.

Then at the box Julian carried.

"Put that down."

Julian did not.

Robert turned to Elaine.

"You had no right to remove company records."

Elaine held up the cassette.

"These aren't company records."

Robert's expression changed.

Maya noticed.

"What is on that?"

Robert ignored her.

"Elaine."

"What is on the tape, Dad?"

David looked between them.

"Robert?"

Robert stepped forward.

Julian moved between him and Maya.

One of the security men shifted.

David immediately raised a hand.

"No."

Robert looked at him.

David shook his head.

"No one touches anyone."

For a brief moment, the brothers stared at each other.

Maya saw a lifetime in that silence.

Robert commanding.

David complying.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Maya was tired of it.

"Uncle David."

He looked at her.

"You told me tonight you were sorry."

"I am."

"Then choose."

Robert's eyes hardened.

"Maya."

She ignored him.

"Choose right now."

David looked at the box.

Then at Elaine.

Then at his brother.

"You don't understand what you're asking."

Maya's voice remained calm.

"Yes, I do."

Robert stepped closer.

"This company employs hundreds of people."

Maya looked at him.

"You always do that."

"What?"

"You turn your decisions into everyone else's emergency."

Robert's face tightened.

"If those records are misinterpreted publicly, Sterling Ridge could suffer enormous damage."

"Then help us interpret them."

"Not here."

"Not tonight."

"Not in public."

"Not with lawyers."

"Not with Grandma's attorney."

Maya shook her head.

"Every answer you give means later."

Robert spoke through clenched teeth.

"You are acting like a child."

Maya smiled sadly.

"There she is."

Robert frowned.

"The daughter you need me to be."

He stepped forward.

"You have no idea what I sacrificed for you."

Maya's eyes burned.

"You didn't even sacrifice one afternoon to come to my wedding."

That landed.

For a second, Robert had no reply.

Elaine stepped beside Maya.

"I should have left years ago."

Robert looked at his wife.

"This is not about our marriage."

"It has always been about our marriage."

Elaine held up her wrist.

"Every time you threatened Maya, it was our marriage. Every time you threatened my accounts, my home, my reputation, my relationship with her, it was our marriage."

Robert looked furious.

"Do not perform for them."

Elaine laughed.

"No. Performing was what I did for thirty-seven years."

David lowered his head.

Maya looked at him.

"Choose."

David closed his eyes.

Then he turned to the two security men.

"Leave."

Robert stared.

"David."

"Leave," David repeated.

The men looked uncertain.

David was still co-owner and board vice chairman.

After a tense pause, they stepped outside.

Robert's voice dropped.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

David looked at his brother.

"I know exactly what I did."

He turned to Maya.

"I signed the proxy extensions."

Robert went still.

David continued.

"I signed the holding-company transfers. I signed the resolutions. I knew Maya had not authorized them."

Maya felt Julian's hand tighten around hers.

David's eyes filled with tears.

"I told myself I was protecting Sterling Ridge."

He looked at Robert.

"But after the debt was gone, we kept doing it."

Robert's face became unreadable.

David looked back at Maya.

"Your father used company-controlled loans to purchase private properties through entities he owned. I approved some of them."

"Why?"

"Because he threatened to expose decisions I had made during the financial crisis."

"What decisions?"

David swallowed.

"I personally guaranteed loans without board approval. If the company failed, I could have lost everything."

"So he owned you."

David nodded.

"For fourteen years."

Robert scoffed.

"This melodrama is embarrassing."

Elaine held up the tape.

"Then you won't mind if we listen."

Robert lunged.

It happened so fast Maya barely reacted.

Julian stepped between them.

David grabbed Robert's shoulder.

The cassette fell.

Maya caught it before it hit the floor.

Her father stared at her.

For the first time she saw something new in him.

Not authority.

Not anger.

Desperation.

That told her the tape mattered.

Maya put it in her pocket.

Robert's voice became quiet.

"Maya."

She backed away.

"Don't."

"You have no idea what that recording contains."

"Then I'll find out."

"Your grandmother was sick."

"She was not confused."

"You don't know that."

Maya looked at David.

He answered for her.

"She wasn't."

Robert turned on him.

David did not look away.

Something ended between the brothers then.

Perhaps it had ended years before.

Perhaps David had simply never admitted it.

Julian carried the box toward the back door.

Elaine followed.

Maya was last.

Robert spoke behind her.

"If you walk out with those documents, don't come back."

Maya stopped.

She turned.

"To where?"

Robert frowned.

"The family?"

Maya looked around Eleanor's old kitchen.

"You spent fourteen years teaching me that the family was wherever you had control."

May you like

Then she opened the door.

"I don't think I want to go back there."
